Homestay with Locals in Namchi, South Sikkim, India

Many times I, mr.hotsia, look for travel experiences that are not just about being a tourist but about truly absorbing the authentic lifestyle of the locals we visit. For this trip, traveling to Namchi in South Sikkim, India, was the answer I was seeking.

After departing from Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim, I stayed in Namchi for a total of 5 nights. The first two nights were at a hotel, and the last night before continuing to Assam. The middle nights I chose to stay with a genuine Nepali local family—not a commercial homestay—but I asked to stay directly with them to experience the true atmosphere and way of life of the local people.

Namchi is located on a mountain about 1,675 meters above sea level, with cool weather all year round. The scenery here is as beautiful as a painting. I clearly remember the house I stayed in was a traditional mud kitchen, with the aroma of Nepali local food cooking wafting to my nose. They cooked and ate with their hands in a friendly manner, something I had never experienced elsewhere.

The next morning, I sat around with the family drinking local tea made from fresh cow’s milk. The wife of the house owner would milk the cow to make fresh boiled tea. The warmth of the tea and the family’s bonding atmosphere made me feel like I was part of this household. Breakfast started around 9:00 AM, lunch was at 3:00 PM, and dinner was between 8:00 and 9:00 PM. This is the real daily rhythm of this community, not rushed like in big cities.

I was deeply impressed by the kindness of the hosts. They allowed me to wear their traditional clothes and took me sightseeing around Namchi. They also taught me how to make MoMo, a famous Nepali dish similar to dumplings but with distinct flavors and preparation methods.

Additionally, I witnessed real cow milking and watched the process of making a local liquor called “Utumba,” made from millet. This liquor holds significance in the rituals and lifestyle of the Nepali people in Sikkim. I was also fortunate to attend a rare Nepali spirit worship ceremony, a ritual seldom seen even by many Indians.

Namchi is a rapidly growing town in tourism and a pilgrimage center of South Sikkim, located not far fromGangtokthe state capital, about 78 kilometers away, connected to other towns by Sikkim’s unique jeep buses. Traveling from Namchi to Siliguri in West Bengal is also convenient and a good option for catching flights or continuing travel elsewhere in India.

If you love learning about culture and want to truly experience local life, I recommend stepping out of hotels to live with locals as I did in Namchi. It offers a deeper and more genuine experience than just staying in a hotel.

Here there is no rush, only the simplicity of a community that firmly preserves its traditional way of life. Talking with them in the local Nepali language, learning to cook local dishes, and closely observing daily routines made me feel like I truly visited another “home.”

If you want to know Namchi more deeply, watch the video clips I recorded myself during this trip to see the real lifestyle and atmosphere that are very rare to find nowadays.Sikkim, India ClipsI want friends to open their hearts and watch

Finally, staying with locals in Namchi is one of the experiences I, mr.hotsia, consider a “satisfying trip” because it opened a new cultural world and deeper human connections beyond conventional tourism. Anyone who loves traveling and wants to experience the real life of Nepali people in Sikkim must not miss Namchi.
