They demonstrated traditional roti making from pounding the flour to kneading the dough and frying it to a crispy outside and soft inside. At every step, I learned and experienced the food culture that is part of their daily life. Their kindness and respect for guests were evident in the way they pressed their palms together in greeting after serving every meal.

Here, I also had the chance to watch the preparation of a traditional breakfast in an open kitchen filled with the aroma of fresh herbs and spices they used. I missed dinner because I mistakenly thought the snacks they prepared were the evening meal, but spending time with the hosts and having simple conversations in the cool mountain atmosphere made that night warm and memorable.
