Dahlap Homestay, Pelling Town, West Sikkim, India: A profound experience in the nature and culture of the Himalayas

Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today I will take you all to experience the charm ofPelling Town (Pelling)in West Sikkim, India, where nature remains pure and local culture is truly simple and warm.

Pelling is located at an altitude of about 2,150 meters or around 7,200 feet, amidst the majestic Himalayas and the Kanchenjunga mountain range, which can be seen up close from this town. The journey from Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim state, takes about 3-4 hours by shared jeep through winding mountain roads with ever-changing scenery along the way.Read the travel story to Gangtok here

Homestay in a Village Near Pelling: A Second Home in the Mountains

One of the most impressive experiences I had was staying atDahlap Homestaywhich is located in a small village on a ridge about an hour from Pelling town. This homestay is not just ordinary accommodation but a window into the life of Buddhists in Sikkim who still live closely to their traditional ways.

The homestay owners, a local family, welcomed me sincerely and warmly. They demonstrated traditional roti making from pounding the flour to kneading the dough and frying it to a crispy outside and soft inside. At every step, I learned and experienced the food culture that is part of their daily life. Their kindness and respect for guests were evident in the way they pressed their palms together in greeting after serving every meal.

Here, I also had the chance to watch the preparation of a traditional breakfast in an open kitchen filled with the aroma of fresh herbs and spices they used. I missed dinner because I mistakenly thought the snacks they prepared were the evening meal, but spending time with the hosts and having simple conversations in the cool mountain atmosphere made that night warm and memorable.

The Pure Nature and Lifestyle of Pelling

Pelling remains a land of true nature. The lush forests and snow-capped mountains in winter make it a destination for travelers and adventurers who love exploring nature. I have heard that the winter snow here is beautifully covering the landscape, a sight I hope to experience again in the future.

Travel in Sikkim mostly uses shared jeeps connecting towns such as Pelling, Namchi, and Gangtok. The distance from Pelling to Gangtok is about 115 kilometers, and from Bagdogra Airport in Siliguri about 135 kilometers, convenient for travelers who want to truly experience nature and local lifestyles.

Overview and Recommendations from mr.hotsia

I want friends to open their hearts and experience Sikkim from the perspective I have encountered, especially at Dahlap Homestay in Pelling, where the simplicity and warmth of the locals blend with the beautiful nature. I believe this experience will make everyone fall in love with Sikkim more and open a new travel horizon that is not just about seeing, but living, feeling, and learning.

If anyone is planning a trip to Sikkim, I recommend arranging a program connecting Gangtok, Pelling, and Namchi to fully experience the culture, lifestyle, and nature. And don’t forget to prepare for the mountain jeep rides, which are another charm of this place.

I, mr.hotsia, would like to be your travel companion and share real stories from the field so you can get to know Sikkim through deep and lively experiences. I wish everyone a joyful trip and to bring back wonderful memories from this Himalayan land.
