Travel to Gangtok, Sikkim State, India with mr.hotsia

If you are looking for a unique travel experience in northern India—I’m mr.hotsia and I’d like to share my firsthand experience from the capital of Sikkim, Gangtok. This city is an interesting starting point for anyone wanting to experience the beauty of the Himalayas, mountain lifestyles, and a diverse culture blended harmoniously.

Gangtok is located at a high altitude surrounded by mountains and forests. National Highway 31A is the main route connecting Gangtok to Siliguri city in West Bengal state, about 114 kilometers away. Traveling from Siliguri to Gangtok is convenient and the highway is passable in all weather conditions. I traveled from Bagdogra Airport located in Siliguri, which is the closest airport for tourists heading to this city.

After landing at Bagdogra Airport, just 16 kilometers from Siliguri city center, I chose to take a shared jeep service that connects directly to Gangtok. There is also a daily helicopter service for those who want to save time and enjoy panoramic mountain views.

Atmosphere and Travel in Gangtok

Upon arriving in Gangtok, the first thing I noticed was the cool, comfortable air and peaceful atmosphere. I stayed at a small hotel in the city center, convenient for exploring local markets and restaurants. In this city, buses and shared jeeps are the main transportation used to connect to nearby towns such as Namchi and Pelling.

For traveling to Namchi, the main town of South Sikkim known as the 'Heaven of the Sky,' I took a local jeep from Gangtok. The journey took over two hours. Namchi is situated about 1,675 meters above sea level. The climate and culture here are distinctly different from Gangtok.Namchi TownIt is a destination I highly recommend everyone experience at least once.

Experience the Lifestyle and Culture in Gangtok

In Gangtok, I was fortunate to talk with local residents who warmly shared their way of life and culture. Many spoke Nepali, Hindi, and English. I tried local food at the fresh market, filled with the aroma of spices and herbs different from typical Indian cuisine. The dish that impressed me was MoMo, a Nepali-style dumpling made fresh and hot, with a mild flavor perfect for the cool weather here.

Besides food, the markets in Gangtok also offer unique handicrafts and handwoven fabrics from various Sikkimese tribes. I strolled around enjoying traditional music performances and street singing that felt like scenes from a real-life documentary.Watch a clip of traditional music atmosphere in Sikkimthat I recorded to give you a clearer picture.

From Gangtok to Namchi and Pelling

After resting two nights in Gangtok, I continued my journey to Namchi by taking a shared jeep popular among locals for intercity travel. Traveling in Sikkim emphasizes simplicity and is friendly for adventurous tourists. Along the way, the views of the Himalayas and small villages felt like stepping back in time to when nature was still pure.

If you are interested in the atmosphere of Pelling, located in western Sikkim at an altitude of 2,150 meters, I recommend planning to continue from Namchi to Pelling. There you will see the stunning Kanchenjunga mountain range and experience a rural lifestyle that remains very traditional.Read about Dahlap Homestay in Pellingwhere I stayed myself.

Travel Tips and Return Route Recommendations

For the return trip from Namchi, I chose to go directly to Siliguri, which is convenient and saves time. Using shared jeep services is the best way to travel within Sikkim because some roads are narrow mountain paths, and sharing rides allows you to experience the atmosphere and chat with locals more. Also, don’t forget to use Google Maps to plan your route and check road conditions before departure. I, mr.hotsia, assure you that good preparation will make your journey more comfortable and safer.

Summary of Impressions from Gangtok and Sikkim

Gangtok city and Sikkim state are places I, mr.hotsia, want everyone to visit at least once. It’s not just the beautiful scenery but also the warm lifestyle of the people, unique local flavors, and a journey full of challenges and joy from discovering new things.

If you want to start a trip in the mr.hotsia style, focusing on deep travel, understanding culture, and experiencing real village life, I recommend planning a slow trip to Gangtok, Namchi, and Pelling to fully absorb every feeling and story here.
