A New Side of Bali You May Not Know: Baliem Valley, Indonesia

When talking about Bali, many think of beautiful beaches, white sand, clear sea water, and the unique charm of Hindu culture. But for me, mr.hotsia, my latest trip toBaliem Valleyon Bali Island in Indonesia revealed another side of Bali that few talk about or even know much about. This is the world of indigenous tribes who still preserve their traditional highland rural lifestyle, surrounded by steep mountains—beautiful and raw in a way you have to see with your own eyes.

Travel and Atmosphere in Baliem Valley

Traveling from the familiar city ofDenpasarto Baliem Valley is definitely not as easy as taking a taxi to the beach. I, mr.hotsia, spent several hours on a domestic flight from Bali to the nearest point, then continued by car and hiking up the mountain to the tribal village. The atmosphere here is completely different from typical tourist cities. There are no fast food restaurants, no luxury hotels—only nature and traditional communities living their way of life.

The air is cool and fresh, mixed with the scent of earth, forest, and dry wood along the way. I felt like I was traveling back in time to an era before the world became fully modernized.

Indigenous Lifestyle and Culture

One of the most impressive things for me was the way of life of the people in Baliem Valley. The indigenous people here have a unique identity, from their colorful handwoven clothing to their rituals and beliefs that are still strongly preserved. Although some tourists visit, they maintain a simple and peaceful lifestyle.

I had the opportunity to participate in a local ceremony organized by the villagers, filled with singing and dancing that showed respect for nature and ancestors. These events made me realize that visiting here is not just about sightseeing nature but truly understanding the lifestyle and spirit of the people.

Local Food You Must Try

Although the food in Baliem Valley is simple, the flavors are surprisingly bold and delicious. I, mr.hotsia, tried local dishes made from fresh ingredients found in the area, such as wild vegetables, river fish, and locally raised meat. What impressed me most was eating in this homely atmosphere, without much seasoning but full of warmth and hospitality from the hosts.
