sate kambing Delicious Balinese Satay
When it comes to food that I, mr.hotsia, never miss when arriving in Bali, Indonesia, it is “satay” or what they call heresate kambingwhich is goat meat satay with a very rich and mellow flavor. I have tried satay in many places across Asia, but Bali’s version has a unique character that makes me more fond of it than any other.
Bali is not only famous for its beautiful beaches and Hindu temples, but its cuisine is also a highlight that travelers like me must try thoroughly. Especially Balinese satay, which differs from satay in other countries by using kambing meat or goat meat as the main ingredient. The flavor is rich, fragrant with spices simmered in peanut sauce, but not too heavy, with a perfect balance of sour, sweet, and salty.
Once, when I traveled from Ngurah Rai Airport into Bali city (Read more about traveling from Ngurah Rai Airport Bali to the city) I stopped to eat satay at a small roadside stall in the Kuta area, a popular zone for tourists to stay. The place was not fancy, but the aroma of grilled satay was so tempting I couldn’t resist. I ordered sate kambing served with sticky rice and freshly made peanut sauce. The sauce was very rich, slightly sweet, a bit salty, with a mild spice aroma that was not overpowering, making the goat meat tender and free from any gamey smell.
There are many satay stalls in Bali, each with its own dipping sauce recipe and meat marinating method. I recommend trying small local places where locals really eat because you get the authentic taste and very affordable prices. It’s a meal that truly satisfies food-loving travelers like me, mr.hotsia.
Besides goat, Balinese satay also comes with pork, chicken, and beef. But if you prefer a strong flavor and distinct spice aroma, I recommend choosingsate kambingwhich is much more delightful. I also have a video clip of me eating Balinese satay. Feel free to watch it here.sate kambing Delicious Balinese Satay
Balinese Satay in the Context of Culture and Tourism
Bali is an island famous for its strict Hindu culture and a way of life deeply connected to religion and nature. I, mr.hotsia, have written about Balinese Hindu culture that every home has a personal shrine and regularly performs offerings ceremonies. This reflects true respect for nature and sacred things (Read more about Balinese culture)
). Satay is not separate from this way of life because all ingredients and seasonings are carefully selected using fresh local produce. Sometimes I see Balinese vendors grilling satay over special wood charcoal to create a unique aroma that greatly enhances the flavor of kambing meat.
For tourists interested in trying local food in Bali, I recommend visiting the Kuta area, which is both a lodging and a hub for various restaurants. Here you can find street food satay stalls at affordable prices and upscale restaurants serving Balinese fusion cuisine to enjoy (Read more about traveling to Bali)
Balinese Satay Eating Experience with mr.hotsia
Once I traveled to Bali specifically to experience the local lifestyle and cuisine. After landing at Ngurah Rai Airport, I went into town and stopped at a local market filled with the aroma of spices and various foods. I bought sate kambing from a small stall owned by a genuine Balinese who grilled the satay carefully.
After tasting the first bite, I almost couldn’t stop eating. The goat meat was very tender, not tough, and had no gamey smell. The peanut sauce was rich but not greasy, with a slightly spicy dip that cut through the richness perfectly. I ate it with sticky rice wrapped in banana leaf, which added a natural fragrance. Sometimes I dipped it with fresh chili for extra heat. It was so delicious I had to share without hesitation.
Besides satay, Bali also has other interesting local dishes such as Nasi Campur, a mixed rice dish with various side dishes, and Babi Guling, a Balinese special roast pork. I, mr.hotsia, will compile more stories about Balinese food in upcoming articles. But if you want to start with satay, I guarantee you won’t be disappointed here.
