Jakarta Travel Information by mr.hotsia
Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, is a city I, mr.hotsia, have had the opportunity to experience myself. Although it is a large city full of chaos and traffic jams, it has its own charm that travelers like me should not miss.
Choosing a Neighborhood to Stay in Jakarta: Jaksa Street is the Answer
Before arriving in Jakarta, I wasn’t sure which area to stay in. But after thorough research, I found that the most affordable and safest neighborhood in the city isJaksa Streetwhich is located only about 3 kilometers from Jakarta’s central train station. This area is popular among backpackers who want a simple atmosphere. There are dozens of guesthouses and hotels to choose from, and importantly, street food stalls and small bars where you can enjoy the local vibe.
I chose to stay at KL Hotel in this area. The rooms were clean, with high-speed internet and breakfast included, costing about 250,000 Rupiah per night, or approximately 700-800 Baht for a twin room. This was very good value considering the comfort and safety I experienced here. Even guidebooks recommend staying in this area due to its reliable safety.
Recommended to Stay Near the Airport for Early Flights
For travelers like me who have early morning flights, staying near Soekarno-Hatta Airport is the best choice. The airport is about 30 kilometers from the city center, and Jakarta’s traffic is almost always congested. I chose to stay at Pop Hotel, which is adjacent to the airport. Although the price is slightly higher than Jaksa Street, about 1,200 Baht per night, the convenience for early travel and a good rest made it worthwhile.
For travel between the airport and the city, if your budget allows, taxis are convenient. But if you want to save money, I recommend using the bus service.PERUM DAMRIwhich runs between the central train station and the airport. The fare is only 30,000 Rupiah, which saves a lot without worrying about safety.
Soekarno-Hatta Airport has three terminals, separated by about 800 meters. Walking between them is inconvenient, but there is a free shuttle service. I recommend checking carefully which terminal your flight departs from to plan your time well and avoid missing your flight.
Food in Jakarta: Local Flavors You Must Try
I spent two nights in Jakarta, one night in the city near Jaksa Street and another near the airport. Most food here focuses on rice with curry, fried rice, or fried noodles sold by street vendors and small markets. If you like satay, give it a try. However, I found that satay in Jakarta is not as outstanding as in Bali. I once ate Madura satay in Bali and loved it so much that even when I went to Madura Island, it wasn’t as delicious.
If you want tasty street food, order it freshly made, hot, and fully cooked. Indonesian food generally emphasizes freshness and strong flavors, such as Nasi Goreng (fried rice), which you can find easily in the city’s alleys.
Daily Life and Atmosphere in Jakarta
Jakarta is a city with over 8 million people, located on the northwest coast of Java Island, with a history of more than 490 years. Although it is a busy and chaotic city, I, mr.hotsia, felt the vibrant energy of its people—from street vendors, lively traffic despite congestion, to the harmonious blend of diverse cultures.
Most Jakartans live simply, with fresh markets and street food stalls filled with the aroma of spices and fresh ingredients. I enjoy strolling through small alleys to discover local food and hidden small coffee shops.
Connecting to Other Travel Destinations in Indonesia
Jakarta is a good starting point for those planning to travel to other provinces in Indonesia, such as Bali, which I have written about.Traveling from Denpasar Bali Airport to the CityOr if you enjoy nature and different cultures, you can conveniently fly on to cities like Medan in Sumatra.
For those interested in Indonesian cuisine, I recommend reading aboutMedan Foodwhich I have experienced. Or if you like cultural cities like Bali, check outUbud City, Baliwhich I also recommend.
Summary of Jakarta Experience by mr.hotsia
Traveling in Jakarta from my perspective, mr.hotsia, is about experiencing a big city with diverse cultures and authentic urban life. Jaksa Street is a suitable place for travelers seeking safety and affordable prices. For those with early flights, staying near the airport is recommended for convenience. Local food here may not be as remarkable as Bali’s, but it has its own charm. Traveling connections to other parts of Indonesia are easy and convenient.
I hope this shared experience helps you prepare and plan your trip to this capital city with confidence and enjoyment.
