Travel to Muang Khop and Muang Chianghon, imaginary valley towns in Xaignabouli Province, Laos

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to experience the atmosphere of two small towns hidden in valleys: Muang Khop and Muang Chianghon in Xaignabouli Province, Laos. These are not just ordinary towns but seem like imaginary places that many have never known. Even I, who have traveled many times in Laos, only recently had the chance to visit on a trip I've long dreamed of.

Xaignabouli Province, which has 18 districts (including the newest district, Xai Somboon), is a region I have traveled extensively. However, these two towns, Muang Khop and Chianghon, are very hard to reach. You must take a slow boat on the Mekong River or enter from northern Thailand at Phayao Province and then travel several more hours by car to get there.

Starting the journey from the Thai side at the Chiang Khong Mekong River Bridge checkpoint

This trip began at the Chiang Khong Mekong River Bridge checkpoint in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. Then I took a car to Huay Sai, Bokeo Province, Laos, to board a slow boat to Ban Pak Khop, where the Khop River flows into the Mekong River. The boat fare is 300 baht per person. The boat departs at 11 a.m. and takes about 4 hours to reach Pak Khop, the starting point of this valley adventure.

From Pak Khop, there are vehicles to Muang Khop and Chianghon, but the departure times are uncertain. That afternoon, when I arrived, there were no vehicles, so I had to hire a taxi at a negotiable price. I bargained the price down to 600 baht from the original 1,500 baht. I arrived in Muang Khop around 5 p.m.

Muang Khop: A small, peaceful, and charming valley town

Muang Khop is truly a small town hidden in a valley, much smaller than I expected. There are no more than three hotels, mostly fan rooms priced around 400 baht per night. Air-conditioned rooms are very limited. The town's atmosphere is simple and very quiet, especially at night when there is almost no noise disturbance.

On the day I arrived, tired from the long journey, I chose to rest comfortably at my accommodation. But the next morning, I woke up early to visit Muang Khop’s small morning market. The market is very small with few vendors, but everyone is friendly. Local foods to try include sticky rice with papaya salad and rare traditional desserts.

Morning mist covers the entire town of Muang Khop, creating a dreamlike scene wherever you look. The town is only 16 kilometers from Ban Huak checkpoint in Phayao Province, making me feel like I crossed into a new, peaceful, and different world.

Continuing the journey to Muang Chianghon, a remote town preserving traditional ways of life

After resting and recharging in Muang Khop, I traveled to Muang Chianghon by car, costing 200 baht per person and taking about 2 hours. Although the roads are not very convenient, the route is filled with mountain views and small villages along the way.

Muang Chianghon is about 50 kilometers from Muang Ngeun, a border town I mentioned inTrip to Muang NgeunIt is also not far from the Huay Kon checkpoint, which connects to Nan Province, Thailand.

Chianghon is a very remote town with no ATMs. Visitors must prepare Lao kip cash before traveling. I overlooked this and had to ask locals to help transfer and exchange kip. So, anyone planning to visit should carefully plan their cash needs.

Accommodation and atmosphere in Muang Chianghon

There are about 5-7 accommodations in this town. I stayed at Benmat Hotel, an air-conditioned room costing 400 baht per night, which was worth the small comfort. Muang Chianghon has no ATMs and retains much of the authentic Lao lifestyle.

Before traveling here, tourists must notify the local police and tourism office for safety and legal compliance. I was once questioned by Lao police for an hour in this town, which gave me insight into their procedures and seriousness.

Morning market in Muang Chianghon and local foods worth trying

The morning market is another highlight of Muang Chianghon, offering many local dishes such as sticky rice with pla dek, Mekong fish tom yum, and fresh fruits sold simply by locals. The utensils and cooking methods remain traditionally natural.

For friends who love authentic Lao food, I recommend watchingXaignabouli Food: Traditional Lao Cuisine from Xaignabouli Provinceon my YouTube channel to better understand and see the local dishes of Xaignabouli Province.

A challenging but rewarding journey in Xaignabouli Province

The route to Muang Khop and Chianghon requires patience and a love for adventure. Starting from the Chiang Khong Mekong River Bridge checkpoint, through Huay Sai, and a slow boat ride on the beautiful Mekong River, arriving at Muang Khop and Chianghon surrounded by mountains. Though the journey is not comfortable, the experience is unique and priceless.

Final overview of the trip and advice from mr.hotsia

This exciting trip started on October 2, 2014, and ended on October 5, 2014. I recorded photos and videos with a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V camera and an LG G3 phone, producing sharp images and 4K videos uploaded to my YouTube channel. Anyone interested in seeing the real atmosphere can visit there.

Muang Khop and Chianghon are not towns for typical tourists seeking convenience. But if you enjoy rugged travel and experiencing authentic rural Lao culture, these places offer deep and memorable experiences, rare local foods, and warm interactions with locals.

For those wanting to explore Xaignabouli Province fully, I recommend visitingMuang Hongsaand the Muang Hongsa morning marketMuang Hongsa Morning Marketwhich are in the same area and showcase the diverse Tai Lue culture very interestingly.

Finally, traveling to Muang Khop and Chianghon will show you another beautiful, peaceful, and warm side of Laos, reflecting the true Lao spirit that mr.hotsia hopes everyone will experience at least once in their life.
