Huay Kon International Border Checkpoint, Nam Ngum Checkpoint, Nan - Muang Ngum, Laos

When talking about traveling from Nan Province to Laos, especially if you want to visit Luang Prabang, Huay Kon International Border Checkpoint, or called Nam Ngum Checkpoint on the Laos side, is the starting point I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend. This checkpoint has only recently opened as an international border crossing. It is considered a new and very interesting route for travelers who enjoy deep exploration and want to experience authentic Lao lifestyle at a relaxed pace.

Huay Kon Checkpoint is located about 138 kilometers from Nan city. I have driven this road myself and noticed that the road has greatly improved and is expected to be fully completed within a few months, which will make travel much more convenient. Cars can comfortably drive at higher speeds. This route is perfect for those who want to visit the Tai Lue town of Hong Sa and then continue to Luang Prabang in Laos, allowing you to fully experience the cultural diversity and lifestyle in Xaignabouli Province.

Cross-border Experience and Travel from Huay Kon Checkpoint

Upon arriving at Huay Kon Checkpoint, called Nam Ngum Checkpoint on the Laos side, it is only 3 kilometers from Muang Ngum town. I, mr.hotsia, have crossed this checkpoint several times. When it first opened, the management was good, the staff were friendly, and there is a regular minibus service at the Laos checkpoint. The fare from the checkpoint to Muang Ngum is about 20 baht, but you need to hurry because if the vehicle is full, you have to wait for the next trip.

The checkpoint operates from 8:00 AM to around 5:00 PM. If you cross after hours or on holidays, there may be an overtime fee of about 40 baht (10,000 kip), which is quite reasonable for a comfortable and safe travel experience.

Recommended Travel Route from Muang Ngum to Luang Prabang

After staying in Muang Ngum, a small and quiet town with morning and evening markets to stroll around, my favorite accommodation is Ruean Pak Duan Phen, which is clean and simple, making it a great base for rest.Read more about Muang Ngum

For those who want a chill trip, I, mr.hotsia, recommend a route I tried and really liked: stay one night in Muang Ngum, then take a minibus in the morning to Hong Sa, which takes about 1 hour with daily departures. The fare is around 100 baht. Hong Sa is a town with many Tai Lue people who have well preserved their traditional culture.Exploring Hong Sa Town, Xaignabouli ProvinceHere, there is a morning market I really like, where you can experience the local lifestyle and fresh traditional food, similar to markets in northern Thailand.

From Hong Sa, you can continue by vehicle to Ban Tha Chuang for a homestay night. Ban Tha Chuang is a riverside village along the Mekong River with a peaceful atmosphere. I have stayed in a homestay here and felt warmly welcomed as if living with a local family. The food here is very delicious, authentic Lao style, and not widely known.Ban Tha Chuang Homestay by the Mekong RiverThis is an experience I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend trying.

The next day, you can take a slow boat departing Ban Tha Chuang at 11 AM, cruising to Luang Prabang. The trip takes about 6-7 hours, arriving in the evening. This is ideal for those who want to enjoy the atmosphere along both sides of the Mekong River. Along the way, you will see beautiful scenery and simple riverside communities. It is a slower but very charming journey.

Alternative Travel Routes from Muang Ngum

If you don’t want to go via Hong Sa, there are two other routes I, mr.hotsia, have tried and recommend: traveling from Muang Ngum to Udomxai or Muang Khai, small towns in the southern part of Xaignabouli Province, then continuing by vehicle to Luang Prabang. This route may require an overnight stay in Udomxai as the buses are not frequent.

Another option is traveling from Muang Ngum to Huay Khaen, then continuing to Pak Beng. I have stayed in a homestay here and really liked the atmosphere. Pak Beng is a small, peaceful town and a departure point for the slow boat to Luang Prabang at 9:30 AM, arriving in the evening. This is a great choice for travelers who want an eco-friendly and unhurried trip.

Lifestyle and Atmosphere I Found in Xaignabouli Province

Xaignabouli Province is a place I, mr.hotsia, have visited many times and really like because the Tai Lue culture is still strong here. Locals live simply. I experienced the morning market in Hong Sa, which is full of fresh vegetables, pla dek (fermented fish), fermented fish sauce, and other local foods that are hard to find elsewhere but have delicious, rich flavors.Hong Sa Morning MarketIt is a spot I enjoy walking around to observe local life and buy snacks to take home.

Additionally, I witnessed traditional cooking of Kua Pla Dek at Ban Tha Chuang. The locals prepare it carefully using fresh ingredients from the Mekong River. VideoKua Pla Dek (local Laos food in Hong Sa)Cooking together with the locals was a highlight of this trip for me.

Summary of Experience and Recommendations from mr.hotsia

For anyone wanting to experience cross-border travel on a less touristy route, Huay Kon Checkpoint is a great starting point. Whether crossing to Muang Ngum for a relaxed stay or using it as a transfer point to Hong Sa, Ban Tha Chuang, Pak Beng, or Luang Prabang, this checkpoint suits travelers who prefer independent travel and want to truly learn about the Lao lifestyle in Xaignabouli Province.

I, mr.hotsia, recommend preparing early in the morning to pass the checkpoint smoothly and continue your journey. Don’t forget to bring some Lao kip for transport fares and small expenses that may arise, especially if traveling during holidays or after work hours.
