Ban Tha Suang Homestay by the Mekong River, Laos: An authentic experience of true Lao lifestyle
If you are looking for a genuine homestay in a peaceful atmosphere by the Mekong River, this is the answer. Ban Tha Suang Homestay (also called Ban Tha Suang) is located in Xaignabouli Province, Laos, near Hongsa town. I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel there and experience it firsthand, and I want to share it so everyone can get to know and want to experience the same atmosphere.
Ban Tha Suang is a small village with only a few dozen households, located on the banks of the Mekong River, about 30 kilometers east of Hongsa town. The route from Hongsa to Ban Tha Suang can be traveled by bus with 1-2 trips daily, taking about 1.5 hours. If you prefer a slow boat trip, you can also travel by boat from Pak Beng or Luang Prabang to Ban Tha Suang conveniently.
Homestay relaxation with local families
I stayed at the home of Nang Porn, one of the very friendly homestay owners. Her house is right on the Mekong River, so in the morning you can wake up to a wide river view, birdsong, and a cool breeze. For those who want to experience the authentic Lao way of life, this place is perfect. You will eat home-style food made from fresh seasonal ingredients such as Mekong river fish caught nearby, fresh vegetables, and traditional Lao dishes with unique flavors.
The village also offers fun activities such as fishing with locals using an ancient net called “Mong,” a large net for catching big fish in the Mekong River. If you come during special seasons, you might see red ant egg harvesting or cricket catching. These experiences are not available at big city accommodations.
Nature and adventure in the deep Mekong forest
Ban Tha Suang is surrounded by still abundant nature. Around the village are deep forests and waterfalls rarely visited by tourists. If you are interested in pure natural adventure, you can contact Nang Porn to arrange a boat trip to these remote spots. Cruising the Mekong River through forested hills and small villages was a memorable experience for me, like stepping back to a time when nature was pristine and life was peaceful and simple.

Authentic Lao food at Ban Tha Suang
Meals at Nang Porn’s home were a highlight that impressed me, mr.hotsia. The food is made from fresh ingredients including fried Mekong river fish, stir-fried vegetables, and the original fragrant and delicious pla ra (fermented fish). I recommend watching the cooking clip I recorded here.Kua Pla DaekYou will see that village-style cooking is simple but full of flavor and unique aroma.
There is also a chance to try cooking with the locals, learning secret recipes and traditional methods, an experience you won’t find in resorts or luxury accommodations.
Unique atmosphere and warm hospitality
What I liked most about staying at Ban Tha Suang Homestay was the friendliness of the villagers. This is not a commercial accommodation but a community lifestyle warmly welcoming tourists like visiting relatives in the countryside. Nang Porn and her family gladly share local stories, knowledge about nature and culture, including the Bai Sri Su Kwan ceremony I had the chance to join. It is a memory I, mr.hotsia, will never forget.
