Xaignabouli Bus Station: The Gateway to Xaignabouli Province, Laos
For those who have been following my travels, Mr.Hotsia, you know that my goal is to visit all 17 provinces of Laos (including Vientiane). Xaignabouli Bus Station in Xaignabouli Province is my final destination for this mission, which has been a memorable experience full of stories I want to share.
Xaignabouli is a province that tourists rarely visit, possibly because it is a quiet town and not heavily developed for tourism. But for me, this tranquility allows me to truly experience the real lifestyle of the people here. The somewhat inconvenient travel itself adds to the charm.
Traveling to Xaignabouli Bus Station
I started my journey from Nan Province, Thailand, crossing the border at Huay Kon checkpoint, which is a new international border of Laos (read more atHuay Kon International Border Checkpoint, Nam Ngum, Nan-Muang Ngum, Laos). After a straightforward immigration process, I took a bus from Muang Ngum to Xaignabouli, which took about 3 and a half hours. The route is beautiful and challenging with winding mountain roads, passing through Hong Sa town (read about the Hong Sa morning market experience atHong Sa Morning Market) before arriving at Xaignabouli.
This route is the main path used by backpackers and locals. Buses stop frequently to pick up and drop off passengers, especially in Muang Ngum and Hong Sa where buses run regularly, making it convenient to plan trips to various towns in the province.
Xaignabouli Bus Station and Its Important Role in the City
Xaignabouli Bus Station is the transportation hub of the province. Although Xaignabouli town is not very large, it serves as a central bus station connecting to important towns such as Hong Sa, Muang Ngum, Pak Lai, and Vientiane, as well as routes to Luang Prabang.
I had the chance to take a bus from Xaignabouli to Luang Prabang, which took about 3 hours. Most of the route is on dusty and rough roads, including a ferry crossing at Ban Tha Duea where vehicles must board a boat to cross the river to continue on the other side with challenging road conditions. The bus arrives at Chiang Ngum junction; turning left leads to Luang Prabang, while turning right goes to Vang Vieng.
Life and Culture in Xaignabouli Town
Xaignabouli town and surrounding towns like Hong Sa and Muang Ngum are home to Tai Lue people and various ethnic groups. I experienced the simple and warm lifestyle of the locals through local markets, traditional restaurants with authentic spicy Lao flavors, and conversations exchanging experiences with villagers I met along the way.
If you are a fan of Lao food, don’t miss trying local dishes like fermented fish which I recorded in a video clip.Fried Fermented Fish (local Laos food in Hong Sa)This is a signature dish of Xaignabouli Province. If you want to see riverside life along the Mekong at Ban Tha Suang, I recommend the videoCruising Laos 10: Fragrant and Delicious Fried Fermented Fish with Fried Eggwhich will take you to experience the warmth of the riverside community here.
