Pak Ngum Homestay by the Mekong River, Laos
When talking about deep travel experiences in Xaignabouli Province, Laos, I must say that the small riverside village ofPak Ngumis one of the destinations that I,mr.hotsiastrongly recommend because this is travel that goes beyond just taking photos; it’s about experiencing authentic lifestyle and nature that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Pak Ngum is located on the lower Mekong River, about 15 kilometers from Pak Beng, and just past halfway from Pak Beng to Ban Tha Suang. This village is a small community without electricity, preserving a peaceful and simple atmosphere as if stepping back in time. The village is home to Lao, Hmong, and Khmu people living together, each group in separate zones. The name “Pak Ngum” comes from the village’s location at the mouth of the Ngum River flowing into the Mekong River — essentially the confluence of two rivers rich in natural abundance.
Travel and Surrounding Atmosphere
Getting here is easier than you might think. I started my journey from Xaignabouli town, which I have written about in the articleXaignabouli Bus StationTaking a bus through some hilly terrain, it takes about three and a half hours from Muang Ngueang, a town where I stayed and recommended inTraveling Muang NgueangThen transfer by boat or get off at Pak Beng to head onward to Pak Ngum village.
The most outstanding feature is the village’s tranquility, untouched by electricity and modern technology. Most houses are wooden with thatched roofs. The surroundings are full of forests and lush green rice fields. Looking out, you see the slow-flowing Mekong River with small wooden boats passing by. My friends and I truly experienced the simplicity and warmth of the local people here.
Homestay and Local Living Experience
At Pak Ngum, I chose to stay in a homestay directly in villagers’ homes. Each house is separate, giving guests privacy but maintaining a warm, big-family atmosphere. Eating here is a highlight of the trip. Most dishes are authentic local food, such as fresh-caught Mekong River fish, fish larb, and duck larb prepared simply but with bold and balanced flavors. I even had the chance to cook in the kitchen myself, which was a rare and impressive experience.
There is also a traditional Lao Baci ceremony organized by the villagers for visiting guests. This ceremony is full of meaning and warmth, making you feel truly part of the community.
Pristine Nature: The New Limestone Waterfall
After resting and enjoying delicious food, my friends and I had the chance to explore the nearby forest and waterfalls. By chance, we found water flowing down a cliff, and following it upstream led us to a newly discovered waterfall. This waterfall is special because it is a limestone waterfall with tree roots forming layered terraces, giving the water a beautiful emerald color. It’s about a 1-2 hour walk from Pak Ngum village, a manageable jungle trek. Unfortunately, my camera was not waterproof, so I couldn’t capture the full beauty.
Connection to Travel Routes in Xaignabouli Province
Pak Ngum is one of the best spots to experience authentic lifestyle and nature in Xaignabouli Province. It is near Tha Suang and Pak Beng villages, which many travelers use as bases to conveniently visit Hongsa, Muang Ngueang, or even Luang Prabang.Traveling HongsaorTraveling Muang Ngueangwhich I have written about, are good options for those wanting to experience Lao culture in Xaignabouli from a different perspective.
