Travel to Hongsa City, Xaignabouli Province, Laos with mr.hotsia

When mentioning a small town that beautifully hides the charm of Tai Lue culture in Xaignabouli Province, Laos, the name ofHongsa Citymust definitely be on the list of adventurous travelers like me, mr.hotsia. The last time I had the chance to visit this town, I must say it was an impressive experience, clearly different from typical tourist destinations.

Traveling to Hongsa City

For anyone planning to visit Hongsa City, the journey is not as complicated as you might think. The easiest starting point is through the Huay Kon border checkpoint (called Nam Ngum checkpoint on the Laos side), which is about 138 kilometers from Nan city. After passing this checkpoint, you will find regular shuttle pickup trucks running between the checkpoint andMuang Ngeundaily, taking about 10-15 minutes with a fare of around 20 baht. From Muang Ngeun, you need to transfer to a bus heading to Hongsa City, about 30 kilometers away, taking roughly 1 hour with a fare of about 100 baht only.

This route is very convenient for tourists who want to experience the lifestyle and culture of the Tai Lue people in Xaignabouli Province. Previously, I stayed one night in Muang Ngeun, a small but growing town with morning and evening markets and a transport station that easily connects to other towns in the province.Read more about the Xaignabouli Transport Stationto plan your onward journey in detail

The Charm of Hongsa City and the Tai Lue People

In Hongsa City, what impressed me most was the Tai Lue community that still firmly preserves their traditional culture. Tai Lue villages such as Ban Phon Sung and Ban Phon Sai are located just 1-2 kilometers from Hongsa City. The houses maintain the unique Tai Lue architectural style and a simple yet valuable way of life.

Strolling through the morning market in Hongsa City feels like stepping back in time. The market is lively with locals shopping actively. Most of the food consists of fresh vegetables, fermented fish, dried fish, and other local products that made me feel like I was truly standing in a traditional Tai Lue market of the past. The simplicity and naturalness of this market make me want to recommend everyone to experience it.Read the story about Hongsa Morning Marketthat I wrote for a deeper understanding

Accommodation and Restaurants in Hongsa City

For accommodation in Hongsa City, I advise travelers to choose carefully because I once stayed at a guesthouse without windows and with so much dust that I could hardly sleep comfortably. If anyone is looking for clean and pleasant lodging, I recommend checking outJumbowhich is recommended in travel guides and popular among tourists.

Regarding food in Hongsa City, there are several restaurants blending Thai, Chinese, and Lao cuisines. Due to nearby dam construction or power projects, many workers from various nationalities live here. There are about 5-6 restaurants to choose from, each well-decorated and clean. Most customers are workers in the area rather than tourists.

Tourist Attractions and Lifestyle

In Hongsa City, there is an important temple called Wat Sri Mongkhon, but I mistakenly visited the wrong temple, confusing it with Wat Sri Bun Rueang in Xaignabouli City, so I didn’t capture photos or videos of Wat Sri Mongkhon, which was a pity. However, there are still places to stroll and admire authentic Tai Lue houses around Wat Sri Bun Rueang, which is very enjoyable, along with the lush green rice fields surrounding Hongsa City that are very soothing to the eyes and mind.

Additionally, you can travel from Hongsa City to visitBan Tha SuangorPak BengBan Tha Suang is a small community by the Mekong River that still maintains traditional village life. I once had the opportunity to stay in a homestay here, which was a valuable and very friendly experience (if interested, you can contact “Pee Porn” at Ban Tha Suang). Taking a slow boat along the Mekong River from Ban Tha Suang to Luang Prabang is another route I highly recommend experiencing at least once in your life.

Local Food Experience

The food in Hongsa City has unique charm that I really like, such as “Fried Fermented Fish with Fried Egg,” a local dish with a fragrant aroma and rich flavor, or “Fried Fermented Fish” made in a truly local style. Summary of mr.hotsia’s Impressions

Hongsa City is not a bustling or luxurious tourist town, but it has a simple beauty and sincerity from its people. I, mr.hotsia, want everyone who loves deep travel and wants to learn about Tai Lue culture to try visiting here once. You will see the real life of villagers, traditional living, and experience the morning market atmosphere that still retains the true identity of the Lao people. This is another small corner of Laos worth keeping in your travel heart.
