Somtum Pakse: Authentic Lao Flavor from the Heart of mr.hotsia

When it comes to Lao-style Isan food that mr.hotsia loves and highly recommends, it has to beSomtum Paksethe capital city of Champasak Province, Laos. This city is not only known for its nature and World Heritage temple ruins but also as a hub of home-style flavors expressed through authentic Lao somtum recipes that I experienced myself.

Pakse is a city distinct from other southern Lao towns, whether in its tranquility, the lifestyle of its people, or even the simple yet profound taste of its food. This made me, during my several-day visit,Champasakdecide to make sure I had at least one meal of Somtum Pakse because I heard that the “Lao somtum” here has a unique character unlike the Thai somtum we are familiar with.

Lao Somtum and Its Unique Difference

From talking with a somtum vendor in Pakse whom I met while strolling through a small alley beside Pakse forest, this shop has been open for four years. The owner, Khun Khao, is a kind woman who enjoyed chatting and exchanging thoughts about somtum flavors with me in a friendly manner.

The highlight of Lao somtum here is the use ofpla dekor authentic Lao fermented fish sauce, which differs from Thai somtum that usually includes peanuts and yardlong beans. The somtum here has a salty taste and a fragrant fermented fish aroma, giving it a very distinctive character. There are also various types of somtum to choose from, such astam bak hung(ripe papaya somtum), tam som khao pun (somtum with rice noodles), and the most populartam ruam mitwhich includes dried shrimp, grilled pork, and various fresh vegetables all combined in one plate.

I tried ordering a set of tam ruam mit for 15,000 kip, about 45 Thai baht, which is quite affordable for the fresh, quality ingredients and flavor. The somtum set is served with hot soup in a small pot warmed by charcoal underneath. The soup contains soft bones, bean sprouts, and pork blood, which balances the spicy and sour taste of the somtum very well.

Somtum Shop Atmosphere and Pakse Lifestyle

The somtum shop I visited is a traditional raised wooden house typical of southern Laos, with a small restaurant under the house. This atmosphere allows you to experience the real lifestyle of Pakse people, from the customers’ conversations, familiar vendors, to the aroma of food wafting through the air.

Getting to this shop is not difficult. If you are staying in downtown Pakse, you can walk along the alley beside Pakse forest. The shop is on the right side of the alley, very convenient for tourists wanting to try authentic Lao somtum.

Travel and Nearby Attractions Recommendations

If you plan to travel to Pakse, I recommend including Lao somtum in your trip itinerary. Besides tasting authentic local food, Pakse is also a great starting point for visitingWat Phu Temple Ruinsor traveling toPaksongthe coffee town and waterfalls not far away.

Traveling from Ubon Ratchathani to Pakse is very convenient with several daily bus services passing through.Paksé Bus Station, UbonThe journey takes about 3 hours. Upon arrival in Pakse, you can easily use tuk-tuks or motorcycle taxis to reach accommodations or various restaurants.

Somtum Pakse and Unforgettable Memories for mr.hotsia

For me, mr.hotsia, tasting Somtum Pakse is not just about food; it is about experiencing the lifestyle and culture of southern Laos people conveyed through simple yet meaningful flavors. Though it is home-style food, it has a charm that makes me want to return again.

If you want to try something new and unique and experience the somtum flavor as the Lao people really eat it, don’t forget to visit Pakse and follow mr.hotsia to taste somtum at Khun Khao’s shop in the alley beside Pakse forest. You might find a flavor so memorable you won’t forget it.
