Sekatam Waterfall, the tallest waterfall in southern Laos in Champasak Province
Hello, I am mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to experience a waterfall that I personally consider one of my favorites, which is Sekatam Waterfall, or as locals in Pak Song call it “Katam Waterfall.” This waterfall is located in Champasak Province, Laos, near the Sekong border. Many people might be confused by the different names because various groups call it differently. Westerners call it Sekatam Waterfall, official Lao documents name it Tad Sekatam, and we Thai people usually just say Sekatam Waterfall for simplicity and easy recall.
Sekatam Waterfall stands out with a height of up to 120 meters, making it the tallest waterfall in Laos. Although it is not as tall as Thailand’s Thi Lo Su Waterfall, which reaches 300 meters, the beauty and feeling you get from this waterfall are extraordinary. A clear difference is that Thi Lo Su is a limestone waterfall, but Sekatam is not. The water flowing down is from the Sekatam River, cascading beautifully and powerfully over the cliff.
Getting to Sekatam – Through Pak Song, the Coffee Capital of Southern Laos
For visiting Sekatam Waterfall, I, mr.hotsia, recommend starting from Pak Song, the coffee capital of southern Laos, located about 50 kilometers from Pakse. Pak Song is known for its cool climate and highland terrain, somewhat similar to Thailand’s Phu Kradueng. Besides beautiful views and great coffee, it is also a good starting point for renting a motorcycle or car to conveniently reach Sekatam Waterfall. The drive from Pak Song to the waterfall takes about 40-50 kilometers through mountainous and scenic natural routes.
For those interested in more details about traveling in Pak Song and Pakse, I have written an articleTraveling Pak Song, Pakse City, Champasak Provincewhich contains comprehensive information about transportation, accommodation, and nearby attractions.
The Trail Down to the Bottom of the Waterfall – A Challenging but Rewarding Experience
What makes Sekatam Waterfall unique is that it is not just about viewing from the top of the high cliff. The real beauty lies in hiking down to the bottom of the waterfall, which I, mr.hotsia, have tried myself. I can say it’s not an easy stroll but also not beyond the physical ability of most people.
The trail down is a forest and mountain path with a fairly steep slope. It takes about 40 minutes to an hour for fast walkers. Be careful of slipping because of the moist and slippery waterfall mist. But once you reach the bottom, you will see Sekatam Waterfall from a stunning and breathtaking angle. The mist spreads throughout the valley, creating a dreamlike atmosphere.
Pink Stone Flowers and Green Moss – Nature’s Wonders at Sekatam Waterfall
One unforgettable impression for me, mr.hotsia, was seeing the pink “stone flowers” covering the rocks in the lower waterfall zone, a rare sight in the world. These stone flowers are not real flowers but mineral crystals formed by the accumulation of minerals in the constantly humid air. Additionally, there is fresh green moss covering rocks and trees, making the surroundings lush and lively, clearly different from other waterfalls.
I admit that Sekatam Waterfall has a unique charm and beauty. It is a natural paradise full of enchanting colors and nature.
Important Tips and Contact Information
For anyone wanting to experience Sekatam Waterfall like me, I recommend preparing your body and gear well, such as good non-slip sneakers, breathable clothing, and drinking water for the trip. The hike down to the waterfall is not easy but definitely worth it.
Another thing I want to mention is that this place is still not widely known, so it’s not crowded with tourists. It’s perfect for those who enjoy peace and natural challenges. Uncle Jai, the concession owner of Sekatam Waterfall, also offers opportunities for interested people to invest in developing this place as a tourist destination. If interested, you can contact him at the local address.
