Strolling Don Khong Before the Boat Race Day: Riverside Atmosphere You Must Experience

I, mr.hotsia, am currently writing this story at Don Khong, Champasak Province, Laos, an area full of unique charm of life along the Mekong River. Before the annual long boat race at Don Khong, I had the chance to stroll and enjoy the temple fair atmosphere and the local lifestyle closely. This was not just a casual visit but a journey where I recorded GPS coordinates of every photo spot so you can click and see the exact locations with precise detail. This is the first time I have done this on hotsia.com.

Don Khong in the evening before the boat race is bustling with thousands of people from various islands gathering for the biggest event of the year. Although it resembles a temple fair like those in Thailand, there are clear differences such as no Ferris wheels or barrel rides. Instead, there is live music and numerous local stalls selling grilled chicken and fermented fish. The locals seriously catch fish from the Mekong River to make and sell fermented fish because the river is abundant with fresh fish.

After strolling through the fair, I stopped to watch farmers bundling rice to thresh with a machine, which is different from what I have seen in Wiang Haeng, Chiang Mai Province, where traditional hand farming is still practiced. This scene made me feel the blend of old and new in Lao life.

What I liked most were the traditional wooden stilt houses with carved wooden patterns on the balconies, reflecting the local art and culture well preserved. I also noticed that the Lao people here love sugarcane, both fresh and sugarcane juice sold throughout the fair. Children and adults alike naturally chew on sugarcane, and I didn’t miss the chance to buy fresh sugarcane juice to drink.

While walking, I took photos of buffaloes leisurely roaming the fields around Don Khong. Since 3G signal did not reach my accommodation, I had plenty of time to write notes and capture the atmosphere fully before returning to the Mekong riverside, where the view is stunning, especially in the evening when soft sunlight reflects on the water. I believe the morning view here will be equally beautiful, and I plan to wake early to watch the sunrise by the Mekong during the boat race tomorrow.

How to Travel and Context of Champasak Province

For those interested in visiting Don Khong, I recommend starting at Pakse, the capital city of Champasak Province, which is the central travel hub in this area. Traveling to Champasak is convenient with direct buses from Ubon Ratchathani to Pakse, or you can rent a motorcycle to explore on your own (read more atTraveling to Wat Phu Temple)

From Pakse, it’s easy to take a bus to Don Khong, with several routes including minivans passing through the large and interesting Talat Lak Sip Si market. I used this route myself (read the story about this market atTalat Lak Sip Si Market)

Local Lifestyle and Cuisine at Don Khong

I like Don Khong because it still preserves a simple lifestyle close to nature. Most locals live traditionally in well-ventilated wooden stilt houses decorated with handmade carved wood patterns. You can feel the warmth of a community that is not rushed or heavily changed.

The local food that impressed me most was grilled chicken and fermented fish sold throughout the temple fair. The smoke from the fires by the Mekong was fragrant all the time, making it irresistible to try. The sweet fresh sugarcane juice that children chewed on everywhere was another unforgettable flavor.

Feelings and Atmosphere Before the Boat Race Day

The atmosphere at Don Khong before the annual long boat race is lively. People from four thousand islands gather to prepare for the big event. I heard live music and cheerful conversations. It felt like a Thai temple fair but filled with authentic Lao vibes.

Walking among rice fields and the Mekong River allowed me peaceful time to reflect and happily write about this trip. I believe visitors to Laos like this will feel the same, whether walking past old wooden houses or stopping to taste local food at the temple fair.

For those interested in truly learning about Lao life, Don Khong is a destination you should not miss. If you plan to visit Champasak Province, you can also stop by Pak Song town, famous for its coffee and beautiful waterfalls (read moreTraveling Pak Song, Pakse City, Champasak Province)
