Schools in Champasak, Laos: Life Lessons in the Rice Fields of Somboon Phon Ngam Children
I, mr.hotsia, have traveled to Laos many times, but this trip is more special than any before because I intend to show friends the real-life atmosphere of rural schools in Laos, which many may not often see in typical travel articles.
That day, after riding a motorcycle from Wat Phu, a UNESCO World Heritage site that anyone visitingChampasak must not miss, I happened to see a school standing proudly in the middle of the rice fields by the roadside calledSomboon Phon Ngam SchoolA preschool to grade 6 school. I decided to stop by to capture photos and the atmosphere of the children here to share. The school atmosphere is neither luxurious nor modern like in big cities but is full of simplicity and warmth. Children here, regardless of grade, all have bright smiles and clear enthusiasm for learning. I saw some kids playing joyfully, others listening attentively to the teacher, reminding me of my own childhood.
What impressed me most was the sincerity of the children and teachers here. Although there are not many learning materials, everyone tries their best to fulfill their roles. I have photos and video clips to show for a clearer picture beyond just words.
For those interested in helping the children at Somboon Phon Ngam School, I plan to open a donation channel via the Donate button on the website
www.hotsia.comin the near future to deliver aid directly to these children. I hope everyone will help spread the word because the website is still new and has few visitors.Living conditions and lifestyle of children in Champasak
Champasak is a province in southern Laos with Pakse as its travel and trade hub. For those wanting to experience authentic local life, visiting a rural school like this is a valuable experience because you see children growing up with nature and the Mekong River that nourishes the community.
Many times when I visit Pakse and travel onward to
Paksongthe coffee capital of Laos, I see children dressed simply, happily going to school. Although roads may not be as convenient as in big cities, they remain joyful learning and playing with friends.Getting to Somboon Phon Ngam School is not difficult. Starting from Pakse town, you can take a car or ride a motorcycle to Muang Muang village, the boat departure point across the Mekong River to Champasak side. Then a short motorcycle ride brings you to the school. This approximately 30-kilometer journey from Pakse feels like crossing worlds from chaos to rural tranquility.
Personal experience with the children and thoughts about the future
I, mr.hotsia, still remember sitting and talking with teachers and some children who shared their dreams of becoming teachers, doctors, or even coffee shop owners in Paksong, a town I have written about in my article
Travel from Pakse to PaksongandVisiting Paksong, Pakse City, Champasak ProvinceThe children here still lack modern learning materials and teaching aids. I believe that if we have the chance to support them with textbooks, clothes, or scholarships, it will truly open doors to greater opportunities for them. For tourists visiting Champasak, try changing the atmosphere from visiting temples or nature to spending half a day visiting a local school like this. I guarantee you will have a different and deeper experience than ever before.
What to know before visiting and recommendations
Before entering the school, always ask the homeroom teacher or caretaker for cooperation and respect for the place and children here. I recommend bringing some water and snacks as there may be no shops nearby. Also, remember to bring a camera or smartphone to capture the atmosphere but always ask permission before photographing the children.
For those interested in the market and lifestyle in Pakse, I have written about
Talad Lak Sip Si
which is a lively large market with plenty of fresh fish from the Mekong River and also unusual items like giant flying squirrels that are fascinating.Closing with impressions from mr.hotsiaExperiencing the life of students at
Somboon Phon Ngam School
in the rice fields of Champasak made me, mr.hotsia, feel that no matter how fast the world changes, the smiles and hopes of these children remain beautiful and truly worthy of support. For those wanting to travel to southern Laos, besides visitingWat Phu Temple
