Wat Ahong, the Navel of the Mekong River: A mysterious check-in spot in Bueng Kan

When talking about Bueng Kan Province, many might think of the peaceful simplicity of the riverside town or Phu Thok, famous for its beautiful views and challenges. But for me, mr.hotsia, Wat Ahong, or its full nameWat Ahong Silawatlocated in Kai Sai Subdistrict, Bolikhamxay Province, Laos, directly opposite Bueng Kan Province, is another spot I highly recommend anyone passing by this area to experience for themselves.

Wat Ahong is about 20 kilometers from Bueng Kan city. The route I took comes from Nong Khai. When you arrive at the temple area, you will see a sign saying "Navel of the Mekong River." This is not just a nickname but refers to the deepest point of the Mekong River during high water, where the temple has measured the depth to be as much as 200 meters.

The width of the Mekong River here is also impressive, ranging from about 300 to 400 meters. The Thai side is flat land without high mountains, only wide fields giving an open and airy feeling. But looking toward the Laos side, you will see tall mountains standing about 5 kilometers away. This view is both beautiful and unusual because the Mekong water here constantly swirls and spins, a natural phenomenon that is both frightening and fascinating at the same time.

I, mr.hotsia, stood watching the Mekong water at the riverbank and must say that if you are not experienced or familiar with the area, I wouldn’t dare risk taking a small boat to fish here because the water spins strongly and is very deep. You never know what lies beneath the surface. It’s a feeling of both excitement and thrill at the same time.

Wat Ahong: Peace Amid Nature and Mystery

Wat Ahong Silawat is a temple with a peaceful atmosphere, a meditation site that preserves the traditional lifestyle of the Bolikhamxay villagers very well. Traveling to this temple allowed me to experience the simple and warm way of life of the Lao people in this border area, even though it is near the deep and amazing Mekong River.

From the temple, you can stroll along the Mekong riverbank, observe villagers engaging in various activities such as fishing or traditional boating. Sometimes you’ll see children playing happily in the water, a scene that reminds me of the peace that still exists in today’s chaotic world.
