Ho Phra Kaew Vientiane: A Sacred and Historical Site in the Heart of Laos' Capital

When talking about Vientiane, the capital of Laos, besides the chill atmosphere by the Mekong River and cool cafes likeTrue Coffee Vientianewhich I, mr.hotsia, have stopped by to relax at, Ho Phra Kaew is one of the places I always intend to visit every time I come to Vientiane. Ho Phra Kaew is an ancient monument that once housed the Emerald Buddha before it was enshrined at Wat Phra Kaew in Bangkok.

I clearly remember that when I first entered the Ho Phra Kaew area, it felt like stepping back in time to the old days of Vientiane. Even though the Emerald Buddha is no longer there, the atmosphere and sacredness of the place remain very strong. This temple has become a spiritual center for Lao people and tourists who visit to pay respects, make wishes, and learn about shared history.

What I like most are the Buddha statues around Ho Phra Kaew that were damaged during the war. Seeing them reflects the harsh history this place has endured. Although many statues had their eyes gouged out and heads damaged, one statue survived without harm. This statue is located at the far left side of the ordination hall and is believed to bring healing from illnesses if touched. I didn’t miss the chance to touch this statue with faith and to feel its sacred power directly.

Besides its sacredness, around Ho Phra Kaew there is also a stone jar brought from the Plain of Jars in Xiangkhouang, which is a rare artifact and a fascinating cultural symbol. Those who have been to Xiangkhouang will understand the significance of this jar well, but if you haven’t, you can still see it here.

Strolling in Vientiane with the Atmosphere Around Ho Phra Kaew

After visiting Ho Phra Kaew, I, mr.hotsia, usually rent a bicycle to ride around Vientiane. Vientiane is a city perfect for a chill bike ride, especially the routes around Ho Phra Kaew and to other important temples such asWat Si Saketwhich I have mentioned before. Cycling leisurely through a simple city full of history truly enriches the travel experience.

If anyone visits Vientiane and wants to try breakfast or snacks, I recommend walking to the morning market or tryingKhao Piak Vientianewhich is a local dish with a unique flavor for Thai people but guaranteed to be delicious and perfectly match the city’s atmosphere.

Vientiane: A Unique City to Rest Your Soul

When it comes to traveling in Vientiane, I usually recommend spending at least 2-3 days here to truly absorb the lifestyle and atmosphere of the Lao people. Walking along the newly renovated Mekong riverside road in the evening is my favorite time because you can see the big red sun slowly set below the horizon—a beautiful and unforgettable sight.

When tired from sightseeing, you can stop to relax with a cold coffee at famous cafes like True Coffee or Coffee Joma. When I come to Vientiane, I usually stay at Pomprasert Hotel, which is not far from Ho Phra Kaew and the Fountain Roundabout. It’s convenient, offers bicycle rentals, and importantly, has great value for the price. For more information, you can check outTravel Vientianewhich I have written before.

I, mr.hotsia, recommend you visit yourself, and you will understand why Vientiane is a city with a unique charm, both in its past stories and present tranquility.
