hotsia kids School Break Trip 22/26: Explore Vientiane, a peaceful city by the Mekong River
Hello everyone, I’m mr.hotsia, taking you to open new travel experiences during the school break with this tripVientianethe capital city of Laos, which many may have heard of but never really known what makes it interesting. This time, I traveled with my family and hotsia kids to experience the riverside lifestyle along the Mekong and the calm, warm city atmosphere.
Evening stroll along the Mekong River, a unique atmosphere
When talking about Vientiane, the first thing I want everyone to experience is an evening walk along the Mekong River. The riverside road has been completed, becoming a popular exercise spot and meeting point for locals and tourists. Walking along, you will see the sun setting with a beautiful large red glow on the horizon, like a natural painting created by nature itself.
This area also featuresMekong Riverside Night Marketoffering a variety of goods from local products, handicrafts to delicious food. It’s perfect for bringing kids to browse and pick cute souvenirs and to experience Lao culture up close. At night, the place is peaceful but full of charm that truly differs from other cities.
Rent bicycles to explore the city and key attractions
Vientiane is a city easy to walk around, but for families with children, I recommend renting bicycles to tour the city as it helps you cover more places without getting too tired. The hotel I chose is Pomprasert Hotel, located near the Fountain Circle. They offer bicycle rentals and complete breakfast service. Anyone interested in staying at the same place as me can book throughhotsia.comright away.
The main destination for cycling in Vientiane is to visitHaw Phra Kaewwhich is an important city symbol, followed by a stop atWat Si Saketan ancient temple known for its unique architecture and Buddha statues. The kids enjoyed walking around to see the Buddha images decorating the temple walls, a popular photo spot here.
Enjoy iced coffee at True Coffee to recharge on hot days
If you’ve been to Vientiane during the day, you know it gets very hot. My hotsia kids and I often choose to rest in air-conditioned coffee shops. One of my favorite and recommended places isTrue Coffee VientianeThis shop is located on a street corner with both open-air and air-conditioned seating areas. The atmosphere is great for chilling, browsing the internet on your phone, or reading a book while sipping iced coffee. It has become a gathering spot for locals and tourists from around the world.
Taste authentic Lao breakfast with Khao Piak
If you like unique breakfasts, you must try Vientiane’s Khao Piak. The place I like to eat is near Campong, a small unnamed shop but with extraordinary taste. Khao Piak here is similar to our rice porridge but includes pork offal, minced pork, and green onions with coriander. The rice is not too mushy and is eaten with raw bean sprouts and seasonings like our noodle dishes. It’s so delicious I have to share. They also offer noodle dishes and Lao coffee. More details can be found atKhao Piak Vientiane
Lifestyle and tranquility experienced in Chanakham city across the river
On this trip, I also visited Chanakham city, located opposite Chiang Khan. This city is part of Vientiane Province and is an old town where people from Chiang Khan migrated to settle on the Thai side. Crossing over for a visit is easy and does not require a passport, just a temporary pass card from Chiang Khan district. I took the hotsia kids on a tuk-tuk tour to see old temples and the sandy Mekong riverbank, watching a beautiful sunset with a clear view of Chiang Khan on the opposite side. It was a very memorable experience.
Summary of the Vientiane trip with hotsia kids
Vientiane is a city perfect for a relaxed trip without rushing. It’s ideal for families to stroll, enjoy the Mekong riverside views, and learn about authentic Lao culture. I, mr.hotsia, recommend renting bicycles to visit key spots, stopping for coffee at the cool True Coffee shop, and don’t forget to taste the original Khao Piak.
