Casual Chat and a Walk Along the Mekong River Side in Vientiane Watching the Sunset

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I invite you to take an evening stroll along the Mekong River atVientianethe capital city of Laos, a place I have visited many times. Each visit still reveals the true charm of a relaxed trip to Vientiane.

I arrived in Vientiane in the late afternoon. The weather was quite hot, typical of Laos cities during the day. Daytime here is perfect for finding a spot to sip iced coffee in an air-conditioned cafe likeTrue Coffee Vientianeor if you want a chill Lao-style vibe, try Coffee Joe. But for me, mr.hotsia, Vientiane is a city to stroll along the Mekong River in the evening when the breeze is cool and the sun is about to set.

The riverside road called Kam Khong has been newly renovated to be smooth and beautiful. It’s a perfect walkway for tourists and locals to exercise, stroll, or bike. I rented a bicycle near the Fountain Roundabout, where Pomprasert Hotel is located. I recommend staying there if you want good accommodation, affordable prices, and proximity to key city attractions.

Along the Kam Khong riverside walk, I clearly saw the life of the Lao people here — exercisers, children playing, and street vendors preparing for the upcoming night market. The atmosphere felt like opening a door to the authentic riverside lifestyle of the Lao people, unembellished.

The evening sun, orange-red in color, dipped low almost touching the Mekong’s surface. It was a beautiful and romantic sight that I, mr.hotsia, found captivating. The big round sun slowly sank into the Mekong River. Across the river is Chiang Khan, a town I have explored and shared in theChanakham Town Opposite Chiang Khan videowhich is a peaceful Lao town on the opposite bank with equally beautiful nature.

Anyone who has been to Vientiane knows that in the evening, the Kam Khong area hosts a small night market selling local food and souvenirs. I, mr.hotsia, recommend taking a walk, trying the original Vientiane rice noodle soup available at the morning market and riverside, as well as authentic Lao coffee and noodle shops that make you feel like stepping into another world with a simple yet charming lifestyle.

Getting around Vientiane is very convenient. Most accommodations offer bicycle rentals for city rides. Or if you prefer a relaxed walk like I do, you can walk from the city center to Kam Khong easily. Along the way, don’t forget to visit important sites likeWat Si Saketwhich remains well-preserved and was not destroyed during the war. It has beautiful photo spots, with the temple wall being one of Vientiane’s iconic corners.

While walking along the Mekong riverside, I, mr.hotsia, often think about this city’s history as a cultural and trade connection point in the ASEAN region, as well as the peaceful and simple life of the Lao people here, which clearly contrasts with capitals in neighboring countries like Bangkok.

If you want to explore Vientiane deeply and unhurriedly, I recommend planning your trip from afternoon to evening, ending with a riverside walk at sunset like I, mr.hotsia, do. It’s the time when you truly experience the beauty of nature, the city’s tranquility, and the genuine lifestyle of the Lao people.

For those who want to know more about Vientiane, don’t forget to read my articleTraveling in Vientianewhich includes detailed travel information, tourist spot coordinates, and tips on eating and living here.

Finally, I, mr.hotsia, would like to share the video I recorded that day so everyone can experience the real atmosphere.Casual Chat and a Walk Along the Mekong River Side in Vientiane Watching the SunsetHopefully, it will help you visualize and inspire you to pack your bags and experience it yourself someday.

Remember, Vientiane is not just about Pha That Luang or famous temples. Its true charm lies in slowly strolling along the Mekong River, watching the sunset, and soaking in the peaceful atmosphere that makes you feel, "This is a worthwhile journey." I wish everyone a fun trip and to experience Vientiane the way I, mr.hotsia, love it.
