Kayaking in Vang Vieng with mr.hotsia: An adventure along the Nam Song River
When it comes to traveling in Laos to truly experience nature and enjoy fun exercise while admiring the unique limestone mountain views, "Kayaking in Vang Vieng" is an activity I, mr.hotsia, sincerely recommend. Vang Vieng, located in Vientiane Province, is a popular destination among Thai and foreign tourists due to the clear Nam Song River flowing gently through beautiful limestone mountains, a peaceful atmosphere, and a wide variety of adventure activities to choose from.
This time I chose to kayak because I wanted to experience the tranquility of the river and the scenic views along the riverbanks that are hard to find in other towns. Kayaking in Vang Vieng is not just paddling back and forth but truly getting close to nature. The water is so clear you can see the riverbed, large rocks line the banks, and various bird species swoop by.
Traveling to Vang Vieng is quite convenient. If you come from Vientiane, the capital of Laos, where I once stayed and strolled along the Mekong River in the evening,Explore VientianeThere are many vans and buses offering trips to Vang Vieng, taking about 4 hours. For those who prefer speed, flights are also available from Vientiane to Vang Vieng. Personally, I like taking the bus to enjoy the roadside scenery along the way.
Upon arriving in Vang Vieng, I rented a kayak from one of many shops available. The price was reasonable, starting at about 100,000 kip or around 400 baht per day. Kayaking on the Nam Song River is easy; the water is shallow and flows slowly, suitable for all ages. Even those who are not skilled at paddling can try comfortably.
What impressed me most was stopping midway at a large rock by the riverbank to take photos and enjoy the scenery that looked like a painting. The limestone mountains have shapes that vary according to each person's imagination—some resemble a naga, others look like ancient castles, and the riverside forest remains fully natural.
Besides kayaking, Vang Vieng also has charming coffee shops to relax in, just like those I recommended in Vientiane.True Coffee VientianeHere you can find various coffee shops to sit and sip cold coffee to cool down after kayaking.
For meals, I tried authentic Lao food at a small market by the Nam Song River. The chill atmosphere offered dishes like som tam, larb, nam tok, and khao jee, which is grilled sticky rice bread, delicious and affordable for travelers like me.
If you have more time to explore Vientiane Province, I recommend taking a walk in Vientiane city as well, where you can visit the ancient and beautiful Wat Si Saket,Wat Si Saket, Vientianeand the morning market offering local food and goods to choose from.Morning Market, VientianeOr stroll along the Mekong River in the evening to watch a sunset as beautiful as anywhere else.
In summary, kayaking in Vang Vieng is one of the experiences I, mr.hotsia, cherish deeply because I spent slow, quality time with truly beautiful nature, exercised and relaxed simultaneously, and learned about the simple yet charming Lao way of life. For anyone looking for a less crowded destination and wanting to escape the hustle and bustle, I highly recommend visiting Vang Vieng and trying kayaking at least once. I guarantee you will love it as much as I do.
