Chanakram City, Vientiane: The charm along the Mekong River on the Laos side you must experience

If you have ever been to Chiang Khan, Loei Province, and wondered what the opposite side of the Mekong River is like, I,mr.hotsiawould like to share that “Chanakram City” on the Laos side next to Chiang Khan is a small town with history and a way of life equally interesting. On this trip, I crossed over from Chiang Khan to stay one night in Chanakram City to truly experience the atmosphere and bring back photos and stories for you.

Originally, Chanakram City was the origin of the people of Chiang Khan before this group moved to the Thai side and became the Chiang Khan we know today. If anyone has traveled toVientianeyou might understand the Mekong riverside lifestyle in Vientiane somewhat, but this is a quieter and simpler side with ancient temples and nature that remain well preserved.

Traveling to Chanakram City and easy border crossing

Crossing to Chanakram City is not as complicated as you might think. At the temporary checkpoint in Chiang Khan, you don’t need a passport. Just prepare two 1.5-inch photos and your ID card to get a temporary pass at Chiang Khan district office (don’t forget to bring your own photos as the office does not provide photo services). This pass allows you to stay on the Laos side for up to 2 nights, which is a great option for those wanting to change the atmosphere from Chiang Khan.

Upon crossing to the north of Chanakram City market, you will immediately feel that people here live simply. It’s not as crowded as the Thai side. I strolled through a small market with local food and a few made-to-order restaurants. Most dishes are similar to those in Chiang Khan but with slightly different flavors, which is very interesting.

Exploring ancient temples and experiencing local culture

One place I was impressed with in Chanakram City is an ancient temple located in the city center. This temple is peaceful and preserves authentic Lao art well, unlike some temples in Vientiane that have been renovated or are crowded with tourists. Here, you will see the simple and friendly lifestyle of monks and locals. I recommend walking around the temple in the morning, enjoying the cool breeze along with the scent of incense and soft chanting sounds.

Phachana Dai Cliff: A sunset viewpoint not to be missed

If you enjoy immersing yourself in nature and sunset moments, Phachana Dai Cliff is a viewpoint I highly recommend. From Chanakram City, you need to hire a tuk-tuk or a songthaew for about 5-8 kilometers. Although the distance is not far, the winding road and the atmosphere along the way make you feel like you’ve entered another world.

At Phachana Dai Cliff, you will see the long stretch of the Mekong River with the view of Chiang Khan on the Thai side right in front of you. The sun setting on the horizon is a beautiful and powerful sight. It’s a pity that many people still don’t know this place well. I invite you to visit; I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Food and dining in Chanakram City

Of course, traveling with mr.hotsia means not missing out on food. Chanakram City has many small made-to-order restaurants with affordable prices and flavors that Thai people will enjoy. My favorite dish was “Lao grilled pork,” marinated with spices and served with hot sticky rice and authentic Lao jaew dipping sauce. There are also local breakfast dishes like Lao rice porridge or rice soup, similar to those in Vientiane but with unique characteristics.

If you want a cold drink, I recommend crossing back to Vientiane and sitting down for coffee atTrue Coffee VientianeThis café is a meeting point for tourists and locals. It has cool air conditioning and strong coffee, perfect for relaxing after walking around the hot city.

Connecting your trip between Chanakram City, Vientiane, and Chiang Khan

If you plan a chill trip in Laos, I suggest using Vientiane as a stopover before or after, then traveling to Chanakram City to experience the peaceful atmosphere and authentic Lao lifestyle. Because visitingVientianefocuses on strolling along the Mekong River in the evening and enjoying the lively night market. Chiang Khan on the Thai side is also very close and easy to reach.

And if you like nature and the beauty of limestone mountains, don’t forget to visitVang Vieng, Vientianewhich is not far away. There you will find the clear Nam Song River and fun adventure activities, completely different from the peaceful atmosphere of Chanakram and Chiang Khan.

Summary of the Chanakram City travel experience

For me,mr.hotsiavisiting Chanakram City is like opening another door to Laos that few Thai people know about. This place offers not only tranquility but also rich history, culture, and beautiful nature. I enjoyed walking along the Mekong River, visiting ancient temples, and tasting authentic local food.

If you want to change the atmosphere from Chiang Khan or Vientiane, try planning a trip to Chanakram City. I guarantee you will have new and unforgettable experiences.
