Vientiane 2014: Vientiane City Wall, a heritage that tells the story of Lao city life
I, mr.hotsia, had the opportunity to travel to Vientiane, the capital of Laos, in 2014. This time I intended to explore one of the important sites that many might overlook, but for me, it was the starting point to truly understand the lifestyle and history of Vientiane. That is the “Vientiane City Wall,” which holds many stories and a simple yet powerful beauty.
The Vientiane City Wall is located not far from where I stayed in downtown Vientiane. Anyone who has followed my travels to Vientiane knows I often like to rent a bicycle and ride around the city, especially near the Fountain Roundabout. The atmosphere around is peaceful with a lingering sense of the past. Although Vientiane does not have many large landmarks, this old city wall has a unique charm that made me stop and take photos from many angles.
Walking to Experience the Past at Vientiane City Wall
This city wall was once part of the ancient city area, built to protect against enemies and mark the important territory of Vientiane. Today, the wall remains in good condition, and many Buddha statues are beautifully lined up along the wall, similar to what I have seen atWat Sisaket, VientianeThese Buddhas tell stories and showcase art that perfectly blends Buddhism and Lao identity.
While walking along the wall, I felt a peacefulness different from the hustle and bustle of big cities. Vientiane is a city suited for slow strolls while absorbing the atmosphere by the Mekong River, especially in the evening when the soft sunlight shines on the old wall, creating a breathtakingly beautiful scene.
Connecting with Life in the Lao Capital
After visiting the city wall, I usually cycle along the newly developed riverside road by the Mekong River inVientianeThe riverside has become a space where locals exercise, stroll, and enjoy a night market offering food and souvenirs in a relaxed atmosphere. You can also watch the large red sunset reflecting beautifully on the Mekong’s surface.
If you like coffee, I recommend the shopTrue Coffee VientianeThis coffee shop is my regular stop whenever I come to Vientiane. The strong coffee and cool air conditioning help relieve the heat of the Lao sun. Sitting here watching Lao people pass by feels like sitting in a warm home.
Local Flavors with Vientiane Khao Piak
Another thing I never miss when in Vientiane is trying “Khao Piak,” a local dish that is not easy to find in the city. I found a small Khao Piak shop near the morning market selling authentic traditional Khao Piak. The mild flavor, pork offal, minced pork, and fresh green onions and coriander make every bite delicious and comforting, like eating home-cooked food.Khao Piak, VientianeIt is one of the experiences I want everyone to try when visiting Vientiane.
Travel and Relaxation in Vientiane
Vientiane is a convenient city to travel in. I chose to stay at Pomprasert Hotel, which is well located near the Fountain Roundabout and bicycle rental spots, making it easy for me to explore the city. The hotel is affordable but offers good service, suitable for travelers who want to truly experience the city. If interested, you can book accommodation through my website, supporting AEC tourism which I am seriously committed to.
Summary of Impressions from Vientiane City Wall
The Vientiane City Wall is not just an ordinary ancient ruin; it is a window that allowed me to see the historical and cultural path of the Lao capital deeply. It felt like following the past alongside a lifestyle that continues every day in Vientiane. Walking along the wall, admiring the Buddha statues, and sipping coffee at True Coffee are memories I will always cherish.
If you are planning to visit Laos, don’t forget to make Vientiane one of your destinations. Come and experience the tranquility as I, mr.hotsia, recommend. I guarantee you will find a different perspective and unforgettable impressions.
