Satisfying Crispy Pork Basil Stir-Fry in Vientiane: A Must-Try Riverside Meal in Laos

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I'll take you to taste a simple yet extraordinary dish, "Crispy Pork Basil Stir-Fry" in Vientiane, the capital of Laos. Although it’s not as large as Bangkok, its local food is equally impressive.

I strolled around downtown Vientiane after parking my bike near the Fountain Roundabout, my favorite spot to relax and rent a bike to explore the city. Here, there’s a riverside road along the Mekong River perfect for walking and exercising. If you’re looking for a restaurant with bold flavors that don’t need extra seasoning, the crispy pork basil stir-fry here is the answer.

The place I found is a small roadside shop in an alley not far from Vientiane’s morning market. The atmosphere is simple, not fancy, but the aroma of basil and crispy pork stir-fried to perfection—crispy outside, tender inside—tempts your appetite as soon as you enter. The stir-fry uses large pieces of crispy pork that aren’t greasy, mixed with fresh holy basil leaves and bird’s eye chili, plus a secret sauce made by the locals. This gives the dish a rich and perfectly spicy flavor. I ordered hot steamed rice to go with it. I must say, it was very satisfying.

Besides crispy pork basil stir-fry, the shop also serves Lao-style dim sum or “Dimsum Laos” with a unique and delicious dipping sauce, which I also really enjoy. Vientiane isn’t just about cultural or natural attractions; its food charm makes me want to return many times.

Vientiane: A Charming Riverside City You Must Experience

If you have read my articleTraveling in Vientianeyou’ll know that Vientiane is more suited for leisurely strolls than rushing to many places. The charm lies in walking along the Mekong River in the evening, watching the large red sun set over the river, creating a romantic atmosphere that’s rare to find.

After enjoying the crispy pork basil stir-fry, I stopped by to sip iced coffee atTrue Coffee Vientianewhich is a coffee shop I recommend trying at least once. The spacious shop has an air-conditioned zone, perfect for cooling off during Vientiane’s hot midday. Sitting and sipping coffee while watching people pass by is something I really enjoy.

The Charm of Street Food and Lifestyle in Vientiane

Vientiane doesn’t only have delicious crispy pork basil stir-fry. While walking around the morning market and walking street, you’ll find many local dishes worth trying, such asVientiane Rice Porridgea Lao-style rice soup with pork offal and minced pork, rich in flavor and a great breakfast for those who want to start their day energized.

For those who enjoy exploring architecture and temples, I recommend visitingWat Sisaketan ancient temple that survived war destruction. Its highlight is the Buddha statues decorating the temple walls, a rare sight elsewhere. Vientiane perfectly blends the simplicity of Lao life with history and culture.

Easy Travel, Comfortable Stay, and Delicious Food

For those planning a trip to Vientiane, I, mr.hotsia, recommend staying near the Fountain Roundabout. There are affordable hotels and convenient transportation, plus proximity to the restaurants and morning market I mentioned. If you want to try crispy pork basil stir-fry or other Lao dishes, it’s just a short walk. Then you can rent a bike to explore the city or walk to important attractions comfortably.

If you have more time and want to venture outside the city, I suggest visitingVang Viengnot far from Vientiane, to enjoy nature and beautiful limestone mountains, then return to Vientiane to relax and enjoy the delicious food I described.
