This morning in Vientiane with Khao Piak Lao, an authentic Lao-style breakfast by mr.hotsia
I, mr.hotsia, have had the opportunity to travel to Vientiane Prefecture, Laos, many times. One of the experiences that impressed me greatly was tasting the local breakfast called "Khao Piak Lao," a simple rice porridge. Here, that morning made me truly feel the lifestyle of the Lao people.
If you have ever been toVientianeat a relaxed pace, I recommend waking up early to stroll around the Mekong Camp or along the Mekong River, which is the sandbar border between Thailand and Laos. Then turn and walk into the city center near Saengdao Minimart. You will find a small Khao Piak shop with no official name, but the taste and atmosphere of this place made me fall in love immediately.
The atmosphere and taste of Khao Piak Lao in Vientiane city
This Khao Piak shop looks very simple. It seems the seller might be Vietnamese living here because the manner and language used are not pure Lao. But the highlight of this shop is the soft Khao Piak, not mushy like our local rice porridge, with pork offal, minced pork, and pork pieces. They also add green onions and coriander for a fresh aroma that I have never tasted anywhere else.
The Khao Piak is cooked separately and kept in another pot. When ordered, it is scooped into a bowl and topped with various pork offal as requested. It is similar to rice porridge but the rice grains remain intact and not overly mushy. When eating, I add fresh bean sprouts for crunchiness and season it with condiments similar to our noodle dishes, such as fish sauce, chili powder, and vinegar, which all blend perfectly.
The price for Khao Piak here is 40 baht per bowl, or about 10,000 kip only. Besides Khao Piak, the shop also serves noodle dishes and Lao coffee. I like to order hot Lao coffee to drink alongside on mornings when the Vientiane weather gradually warms up.
Connecting with lifestyle and travel in Vientiane
Vientiane is a city with a unique charm. Most visits are for relaxation after traveling from other cities such as Luang Prabang or Vang Vieng, popular destinations for tourists because of beautiful temples likeWat Si Saketand the scenic Mekong riverside attractions at sunset.
In the morning, Vientiane is quieter and more peaceful than other times, making a walk in the morning market area and tasting Khao Piak an activity I really enjoy. Compared to hotel breakfasts that are often Western or fusion style, for me, eating Khao Piak Lao in this local atmosphere is an unmissable experience when visiting.
If you want to experience the chill morning vibe of Vientiane, I recommend renting a bicycle to ride around the city as I often do, starting from accommodation near the Fountain Roundabout, such as Pomprasert Hotel, which is an attractive option for travelers seeking convenience and affordability.
Stop by for caffeine at True Coffee before heading out
After enjoying Khao Piak, I usually stop to relax and sip coffee atTrue Coffee Vientianea very popular coffee shop in this city with a spacious atmosphere, offering both cool air-conditioned and outdoor seating areas. It’s perfect for resting, reading, or surfing the internet before heading out to explore the city further.
I enjoy the feeling of sitting and sipping coffee here, watching Lao people pass by. Life here seems simpler and calmer than expected. Vientiane is not just an ordinary capital city but a great starting point for exploring Vientiane Prefecture and nearby towns likeVang Viengwhich is not far away.

If you arrive in Vientiane and want to taste authentic local flavors without much embellishment, Khao Piak Lao is the answer I, mr.hotsia, highly recommend. It is not just breakfast but a small door that opens to truly experience the lifestyle of the Lao people.
Walking around the morning market, Mekong Camp, and trying a bowl of Khao Piak in the peaceful atmosphere of Vientiane will help you understand the simplicity and warmth of life in this city better. And of course, I, mr.hotsia, will continue to travel and find great stories to share with everyone.
