Riding the Laos High-Speed Train #6/10: Eating Luang Prabang Pho by the Mekong River

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to arrive at Luang Prabang Province, a World Heritage city that impressively preserves the charm of traditional ways of life. This time, I chose to experience the local specialty dish “Luang Prabang Pho” by the Mekong River, along with a relaxing evening atmosphere that truly made me feel at ease.

Luang Prabang is a small town full of tranquility and the simplicity of local people. It is not only rich in historical and natural attractions but also unique in lifestyle and cuisine. I arrived after a boat trip from Muang Ngoy and Khoua, which I previously shared inTraveling to Muang Ngoya route that offers a close view of the lives of Lao people along the Ou River and the Mekong River.

Morning market and local food sources of Luang Prabang

On the morning in Luang Prabang, I woke up early to walk toLuang Prabang morning marketThis is a fresh market with all kinds of fresh produce, from local vegetables, fish, frogs, and even live toads swimming in baskets. This market shows the lifestyle of Lao people who still use fresh ingredients daily and is a place where tourists like me truly learn about culture through food.

After strolling through the market, I stopped to try a simple breakfast called “Khao Jee,” a long bread stick popular among Luang Prabang locals in the morning, as I previously wrote inKhao Jee: The Breakfast of Luang Prabang PeopleThe taste varies according to each shop’s special recipe. Some add seasonings to enhance the flavor, making it easier and more delicious to eat.

Luang Prabang Pho by the Mekong River: An Unforgettable Flavor

The highlight of this trip was “Luang Prabang Pho.” I chose a small riverside restaurant by the Mekong River where I could see the slow-flowing big river and the shimmering evening sunlight. I ordered a large bowl of pho with fresh meat and fresh herbs. The pho here differs from Vietnamese pho in that the broth is not too sweet but rich and flavorful from local spices. The fresh vegetables served alongside include coriander, lettuce, and green onions, adding fragrance and freshness to the pho bowl.

While eating pho, I talked with the owner who said this restaurant has been open for a long time and is well-known among locals and tourists. Eating like this by the Mekong River made me feel deeply connected to the Lao way of life and culture.

Lifestyle and Culture by the Mekong River

If you have followed my stories, you know I like to travel slowly to absorb the atmosphere and culture of each place. Luang Prabang is a city perfect for leisurely walks by the Mekong River, listening to the gentle flow of water and watching beautiful sunsets without rushing.

There is also a cheap food alley and a walking street that I recommended inCheap Food Alley and Walking Street in Luang Prabangwhich no visitor should miss. Besides tasting a variety of local foods, you also get to experience the local atmosphere closely.

Getting to Luang Prabang

For those interested in visiting Luang Prabang, travel is convenient by plane, boat, or car. If traveling by land, I recommend using the bus service fromLuang Prabang Southern Bus Stationwhich is a key connection point between Luang Prabang and other cities in Laos, and also convenient for traveling to Thung Hai Hin or Vientiane.

Summary of Impressions from Eating Pho by the Mekong River

This time in Luang Prabang, I, mr.hotsia, experienced both the authentic taste of local food and the simple yet warm lifestyle of Lao people. Luang Prabang pho by the Mekong River is not just a bowl of food but an experience that deeply connects me with this city.

If anyone wants to experience this lifestyle and flavor, I recommend planning a slow trip to Luang Prabang. Then you will understand why this city is known as a place people want to return to again.
