Travel to Muang Ngoy, Luang Prabang Province with mr.hotsia

When talking about traveling in Luang Prabang Province, many people probably think of the bustling city of Luang Prabang full of tourists. But for me, mr.hotsia, taking a boat trip from Muang Khua to Muang Ngoy is a completely different experience and a great opportunity I don’t want friends to miss.

I was very lucky to have a boat departing from Muang Khua to Muang Ngoy on the day I traveled because recently boats on this route have become harder to find. Normally, the boat only leaves when fully booked, which means waiting at least one night in Muang Khua. But this time, my seven travel companions, mostly foreigners including one from Hong Kong, each paid 400 baht for the boat ticket, which is the standard price for this route today.

The boat trip takes about 5 hours. I still remember that morning I had only one bowl of pho at Sama beach for breakfast because there was no time to eat lunch on the way. So I bought some small apples and sweets to snack on. It was better than waiting for the boat the next day, which might not even depart.

The boat route from Muang Khua to Muang Ngoy is more popular with tourists than the route from Sama beach to Muang Khua, which is mainly used by locals. This route offers more beautiful natural scenery, especially the wider Ou River with gentle currents and some exciting rapids that thrilled my foreign friends along the way.

Near Muang Ngoy, the scenery on both sides of the Ou River is filled with uniquely shaped limestone mountains, similar to the famous Phang Nga Bay known to Thais. But here it’s not the sea, it’s the fresh water Ou River. The evening view with soft sunlight shining on the river creates stunning reflections of the mountains in the water. This special charm of the boat trip is what impressed mr.hotsia the most.

Arriving in Muang Ngoy around 7 p.m., I hurried to find accommodation because I knew the electricity here is generated by a generator and will be turned off at 9:30 p.m. The Grace Hair Hotel I chose is not far from the Ou River. The room costs 160 baht per night, a simple room without air conditioning, but the weather in Muang Ngoy is cool and comfortable, so no need for air conditioning.

There is no internet cafe in Muang Ngoy, and electricity is strictly on and off on schedule. So internet access is out of the question. But I was glad to fully relax without checking emails or working that day. That night, I quickly charged my camera and computer before the power went out, then went to eat at a restaurant by the Ou River. Prices here are higher than elsewhere in Luang Prabang, probably due to the difficulty of transporting goods here and because Muang Ngoy is increasingly popular with foreign tourists.

The night in Muang Ngoy is very quiet. I saw villagers bathing together in large groups of 20-30 people after returning from working in the fields and gardens. Then they quickly ate and rested because there is no electricity after sunset. This riverside lifestyle along the Ou River is truly impressive.

The next morning, I woke up early, not wanting to miss the peaceful and beautiful morning view of Muang Ngoy. I took out my camera to capture the village atmosphere and the Ou River reflecting the soft sunlight with great focus, preparing to share this beauty fully with friends. This is the happiness of a traveler like mr.hotsia.

Connecting with the Luang Prabang experience

For the route to Muang Ngoy, many may start from Luang Prabang, the main tourist city of Laos. It is convenient for both car and boat travel. I have shared about this in an articleSouthern Bus Station, Luang Prabangthat regular buses from Luang Prabang to various cities have many routes and affordable prices.

If anyone is interested in Luang Prabang’s breakfast, I recommend tryingKhao Jee, the breakfast of Luang Prabang localswhich I have tried before. It is a simple dish but with extraordinary taste.

Summary of the trip to Muang Ngoy

For me, mr.hotsia, the journey from Muang Khua to Muang Ngoy was a trip full of mixed feelings — the fatigue from the long boat ride, the excitement from the views along the Ou River, and the warmth from experiencing the simple and peaceful riverside lifestyle of the locals.

If anyone wants to experience Laos from a less touristy perspective and enjoys nature that remains beautifully traditional, Muang Ngoy is an unmissable answer. It is also a good starting point for further travel to other attractions in Luang Prabang Province.

Finally, I invite everyone to try the Ou River boat trip and experience the simple life in Muang Ngoy at least once. I guarantee the impression will stay with you for a long time, just as it did with mr.hotsia.
