Stopover at Nong Khiew Before Heading to Luang Prabang
I, mr.hotsia, recently had the chance to take a boat from Muang Ngoy to Nong Khiew in the morning. The boat departs at 9:30 AM and takes about 1 hour for a ticket price of 20,000 kip, approximately 80 baht. The two sides of the Ou River gradually widen. The scenery along the way is calm and relaxed, like a river gently carrying us through the peaceful Lao countryside until finally the boat docks at Nong Khiew pier.
Nong Khiew is a small town located on the west bank of the Ou River. The town is quite peaceful and quiet, unlike Muang Ngoy where I just left. Nong Khiew is somewhat larger, with a school up to grade 12 and improved facilities such as internet access.WIFIavailable in some rooms, providing convenience for travelers who want to stay connected in this remote area.
After arriving, I found that the boat heading to Luang Prabang still needed 5 more passengers, so we had to wait. I took the opportunity to rent a motorcycle to explore Nong Khiew a bit. The back road of the town is a red dirt road passing in front of the school. I parked the motorcycle at the school gate and captured the daytime atmosphere of the town to share.
Most houses here are still wooden, with wooden pillars and walls, unlike the concrete houses commonly seen in big cities. The community people are cheerful, especially the students who greet tourists warmly. I strolled around taking photos on the way back to the pier, bought snacks while waiting for the boat, and chatted with the children. Though small and quiet, Nong Khiew is full of warmth and the simple life of the Luang Prabang countryside.
For those planning to continue from Nong Khiew to Luang Prabang, understand that the boat trip takes about 5 hours and costs around 500 baht, which is more expensive than the car ride that takes only 3-4 hours and costs about 200 baht. The car also drops you off at accommodations in Luang Prabang.
However, I chose to continue by boat to enjoy the riverside scenery and experience the Lao way of life that may change in the future. This boat route is becoming a fading legend, and I want to capture as many memories as possible.
Lifestyle and Comfort in Nong Khiew
Although Nong Khiew is a small town, it offers several conveniences that make travelers' stays comfortable, such as cheaper accommodations compared to many towns in Luang Prabang Province and affordable food. I stopped at a restaurant near the pier selling pho and made-to-order dishes at much lower prices. I ordered one bowl of pho, one plate of fried pork with rice, and one bottle of Coke. I felt satisfied and ready to continue my journey to Luang Prabang.
The main road in Nong Khiew is a red dirt road passing important places like the school. I rode a motorcycle past wooden houses lined along the road. Students smiled and greeted each other warmly, a scene that impressed me and reflected the warmth of this community.
Traveling from Nong Khiew to Luang Prabang
Currently, there are various travel options from Nong Khiew to Luang Prabang. For convenience and time-saving, you can take a shared taxi or van waiting at the pier. The fare is about 50,000 kip (around 200 baht), and the vehicle will drop you off at your accommodation in Luang Prabang. These vans also connect to other towns such as Xieng Khouang, Luang Namtha, and Udomxai, with reasonable prices and schedules.
For those interested in van services in Laos, I, mr.hotsia, recommend contacting Khun Kaew at Lao phone number 2958999. You can inquire about details or rent a vehicle as you wish. I have used this service and found it greatly improves travel convenience.
