Khao Jee: Luang Prabang's Breakfast
When talking about breakfast in Luang Prabang Province, Laos, many people might think of “Khao Jee,” a long fried bread stick sold along streets throughout the city. Luang Prabang, a small and peaceful World Heritage city, but Khao Jee was what I, mr.hotsia, encountered and was most impressed with during this trip.
Khao Jee in Luang Prabang is not just ordinary bread like many have seen at markets or roadside stalls in Laos. Here, they have a special recipe. Starting with a bread stick that looks simple, but then spread with Luang Prabang’s Jaew Bong sauce, which is completely different from the Isan Jaew Bong, as it resembles our chili paste. Then it is served with side dishes like cucumber, shredded egg, shredded pork sausage, and tomato sauce before being wrapped in thin paper, making it easy to eat and very flavorful.
One morning while I was strolling in Luang Prabang, when the city atmosphere was still quiet, the night market street that is usually lively at night was empty and peaceful. I found a Khao Jee stall right at the night market intersection. This stall only opens in the morning and is considered one of the most popular breakfasts among locals who often stop by after giving alms to monks to buy and eat before going home.
I, mr.hotsia, have missed out several times on Khao Jee that had gone moldy because I bought it carelessly. But this time in Luang Prabang, I intentionally tried the World Heritage city style Khao Jee seriously. The rich but not overly spicy Jaew Bong made this seemingly simple bread stick a delicious and charming breakfast unique to Luang Prabang.
Besides the taste of Khao Jee, I also experienced the morning atmosphere in this city, which is different from other tourist cities. Luang Prabang is a small city with more than 24 ancient temples scattered throughout. I freely took photos in front of Wat Mai and enjoyed the peaceful riverside atmosphere along the Mekong River that morning, filled with a relaxing feeling rarely found in bustling big cities.
Khao Jee in Luang Prabang is a breakfast that clearly reflects the local way of life. Most Luang Prabang people still strongly observe the morning alms tradition, and after the ceremony, they often stop by to buy Khao Jee at nearby stalls. Nowadays, some shops have adapted to accommodate tourists, with owners who can communicate well in English, making it easy for me, mr.hotsia, traveling alone.
If you are planning to visit Luang Prabang, I recommend not missing out on trying authentic Luang Prabang style Khao Jee from a shop in the old town. Especially if you come early in the morning, you will get the best atmosphere and taste. The Khao Jee stall I found is located at the night market intersection, which is very easy to reach because Luang Prabang is quite small and uncomplicated, unlike Chiang Mai which is much larger.
After enjoying Khao Jee, I, mr.hotsia, continued walking in a small alley called “Coffee Joma Alley,” near the Luang Prabang post office. It is an area with affordable but good quality accommodations, suitable for those who want to experience real local life, not in the main tourist zone. This alley has both coffee shops and small restaurants to relax comfortably.
For those interested in learning about travel culture in Luang Prabang, I recommend studying travel information toMuang Ngoywhich is another interesting tourist town in the same province. Or if traveling by bus, you can check travel information atLuang Prabang Southern Bus Stationwhich is the main hub for convenient travel to various towns in northern Laos.
Also, if you enjoy the atmosphere of fresh markets and local life, Luang Prabang morning market is another spot I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend. Here you will find fresh vegetables, fish, frogs, toads, and fresh local ingredients, as well as see many locals shopping in the early morning, which is clearly different from markets in big cities like Vientiane. In the end, Khao Jee in Luang Prabang is not just a simple breakfast but a gateway to deeply understanding the life and culture of the people in this city. If you try Khao Jee while strolling through the morning life of this World Heritage city, I guarantee you will be charmed and want to visit again.
