Muang Ngoy: A small town nestled in the valley and along the Ou River in Luang Prabang Province

Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to discover Muang Ngoy, a small town located in Luang Prabang Province, Laos. It is home to beautiful nature and a simple lifestyle that I have personally experienced.

The night before, I stayed in Muang Ngoy and promised myself to wake up early to capture the atmosphere and shoot videos to share with everyone. My trusty Canon camera, which I always carry with me, has become an indispensable tool for my work.

That morning, I woke up to the soft sunlight gently shining through the village. Muang Ngoy in the morning was more beautiful than I had ever imagined. The Ou River flowed slowly in front of the village. Across the river stood tall, complex limestone mountains stretching along the river until they disappeared from sight. The reflection of the mountains in the morning water captivated me with nature’s peacefulness and beauty created by itself.

I strolled to the river pier, the center of daily activities for the people of Muang Ngoy. I saw many people boarding boats to fish busily. Some swept the streets and prepared simple breakfasts. Life in Muang Ngoy is completely different from Bangkok. There is no hustle or confusion, only impressive peace and simplicity. The many steps leading down to the pier were filled with various boats, including local boats used for travel and work, as well as boats from Khoua, a major town in northern Luang Prabang Province.

Imagine waking up in a small town without any hustle and bustle—how different it is from waking up in a busy big city. I explored the red dirt road behind the village, the main road about 500 meters long, lined with villagers’ houses on both sides. At the end of the road stood another towering limestone mountain, a scene that reminded me of the true essence of Muang Ngoy as a genuine valley town.

This road runs parallel to the Ou River. That morning, few people were out walking; only a noodle snack shop was open. I noticed traces of several Western restaurants that operate at night, catering to foreign customers who come to sip Lao beer and try the food. This contrasts sharply with Muang Ngoy’s quiet nighttime atmosphere, as electricity goes off after 10 PM and everything becomes peaceful again.

After filming around the town, I returned to the pier to enjoy a strong cup of Lao coffee. However, I realized I hadn’t brought any money at all. I thought I would have to owe the seller. I told the coffee vendor I would pay later, and he kindly let me enjoy the coffee without worry.

While sipping coffee on the balcony of my accommodation, I noticed locals making sticky rice alms offerings in the traditional Lao way, which is very different from our country. Here, only sticky rice is offered, while other food is given to monks during their meal time. I followed to take photos and record clips of this activity, chatting with locals about their way of life. It was a very memorable experience.

Muang Ngoy: A boat stop and natural attraction not to be missed

Many may wonder why Muang Ngoy is famous worldwide. The simple answer is that Muang Ngoy is a stopover town for passenger boats traveling from Luang Prabang to Khoua or Phongsaly, a beautiful river cruise route. The boat trip takes about 5 hours, and Muang Ngoy is a perfect halfway rest point.

Here, the scenery is especially beautiful, with the shadows of limestone mountains stretching along the Ou River. The weather is cool year-round, making most tourists choose to stay overnight to recharge before continuing their journey. However, Muang Ngoy is not a place to stay long, as it is a small town with few tourist attractions or activities. Staying several days might become boring.

Nevertheless, Muang Ngoy has other interesting places that I will share in the next part of the "I Love Muang Kgoi" series, inspired by the "I LOVE PAI" concept. Muang Ngoy is like a hidden beauty nestled in the valley and along the Ou River, waiting for visitors to discover and experience for themselves.
