Cheap Food Alley and Luang Prabang Night Market: A Backpacker's Paradise
Hello, I'm mr.hotsia. Today, I will take you to experience real life in the World Heritage city calledLuang PrabangOne of Laos’ top tourist destinations popular among Thai travelers for its unique atmosphere (alongside Vientiane). The common travel route is from Vientiane through Vang Vieng to Luang Prabang, or some choose to cruise by boat from Huay Sai, Pak Beng to Luang Prabang, then return via Vientiane. I myself chose to travel by boat from Phongsali, passing through Muang Ngoy and Nong Khiao, until arriving in Luang Prabang. Those who have followed my stories onTraveling to Muang NgoyorStopping at Nong Khiao before going to Luang Prabangmight have gotten a good picture of the journey and lifestyle along this route.
Luang Prabang is a small town full of charm, preserving its traditional culture and nature excellently. Here, I, mr.hotsia, want to introduce you to one of the highlights of visiting Luang Prabang, which isCheap Food Alleyor as I like to call it"Backpackers’ Alley"because it is the hub for backpackers seeking delicious food at affordable prices.
Cheap Food Alley: A hub of delicious food at traveler prices
Throughout my tiring journey, I could hardly believe that in a city known for its high cost of living like Luang Prabang, there is a small alley filled with many cheap food stalls like this. This alley is located not far from the night market and is a popular spot for budget backpackers to stop by continuously.
Most food in the alley is served in takeaway bags, priced around 30 Thai Baht per bag, which I consider very cheap compared to the price of stir-fried basil with fried egg by the Mekong River that some places sell for up to 140 Baht (35,000 kip). Besides takeaway food, there are grilled chicken, grilled pork, papaya salad, and of course, a cold bottle of Beer Lao, which to me is a symbol of coming to Luang Prabang.
Let me share a fun story about the name “Beer Lao.” In Lao language, Beer Lao is written as “เขยลาว,” which many might read as “khey lao,” but actually, Lao vowels do not include the vowel 'ee' and it is pronounced as “Beer Lao” as usual. No wonder why it got this name. I was so curious that I even bought a Lao language textbook to read about it.
Luang Prabang Night Market: A paradise for shoppers and food lovers
After enjoying cheap delicious food at Backpackers’ Alley, I, mr.hotsia, did not miss the chance to stroll through theNight Marketwhich is another must-visit spot for every tourist coming to Luang Prabang. The night market runs from evening until night, offering souvenirs, local handicrafts, and a variety of local foods to taste.
The atmosphere here is lively and friendly, with locals and tourists from around the world. I enjoy browsing local folk art and tasting snacks like Khao Jee, a traditional Luang Prabang breakfast (for more details, try reading my storyKhao Jee: The Breakfast of Luang Prabang Peoplewhich I have written).
Convenient travel but choose wisely
For those planning to travel to Luang Prabang, you might be interested in more travel information. I have written an article aboutLuang Prabang Southern Bus Stationwhich explains in detail the two bus stations in this city. Especially if you plan to continue traveling to Vientiane or other destinations in Laos, choosing the right bus station will make your trip more convenient and faster.
Also, if you have enough time, I recommend cruising by boat from Khua or Muang Ngoy to Luang Prabang like I did, which lets you experience the beautiful and peaceful scenery along both sides of the Nam Ou River more than traveling by car.
What makes Luang Prabang unique
Besides being a World Heritage city registered in 1995, Luang Prabang impressively preserves its local identity in temples, lifestyle, and food. Although prices have risen with tourism trends, there is still Cheap Food Alley where we can discover the charm of eating like real travelers.
Seeing locals come to buy food in this alley to take home, and backpackers smiling with a bag of food and a cold Beer Lao, that is the charm I, mr.hotsia, want you to experience yourself.
