Gam Kan Kep Visits Great-Grandmother Hongsa EP2: Luang Prabang Morning Market
I, mr.hotsia, would like to share my firsthand experience from the real scene of Luang Prabang morning market, a UNESCO World Heritage city in the Lao PDR that many may have heard of. But if you want to know what this morning market is like from the perspective of a food-loving and exploring traveler like me, you must keep reading.
One morning in Luang Prabang, I woke up earlier than anyone else to experience the atmosphere of the morning market which starts at 5:30 AM. As the sun began to cast its gentle light, the market quickly became lively. Most of the products you see focus on fresh items that you can almost feel their freshness—fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, frogs, and toads still alive in cages or water buckets. Sellers and buyers negotiate with smiles and local language. The trading method firmly retains the traditional fresh market style, unlike the fresh markets in big cities back home.
Luang Prabang is a small town without large department stores like in Vientiane or other capitals, making this morning market not only a place to buy fresh goods but also a center of lifestyle where the locals maintain their community roots closely. I walked around and noticed that the locals here buy fresh food daily rather than stocking up like back home, which keeps the products fresh and rotated every day.
Additionally, Luang Prabang morning market is a hub of local food culture where you can see Khao Jee, a popular breakfast here, which I have detailed in an article.Khao Jee, the breakfast of Luang Prabang peopleKhao Jee here is not just ordinary grilled bread but is seasoned with spices and various side dishes, making it delicious enough to give a thumbs up.
Traveling to Luang Prabang is very convenient, especially if you choose to fly or come by bus. But if you plan to continue to other cities like Phonsavan or Vientiane, you should know about Luang Prabang Southern Bus Station, which I have recommended details about in an article.Luang Prabang Southern Bus Stationwhich helps you plan your trip smoothly without interruptions.
Back to the morning market, I noticed that it’s not only fresh goods for sale but also ready-to-eat food and interesting local snacks such as Lao sweets and Nam Muang, a local dish I recommend trying if you have the chance to visit this morning market (I have written about Nam Muang in an article).Nam Muang Luang Prabang)
Luang Prabang morning market is also a meeting place for people from various regions around the city, including locals and tourists, making the atmosphere lively and diverse. I strolled around and saw Lao Loum and Lao Theung women in traditional tribal costumes selling fresh vegetables and local herbs. Sometimes, Hmong or Yao hill tribe people pass by. I felt this is the true lifestyle that has not been swallowed by modernity.
If you want to experience the lifestyle and culture more deeply than typical tourists, Luang Prabang morning market is a great starting point because you not only see traditional trading but also taste local food and talk with people who are always friendly and smiling.
After finishing at the morning market, I also recommend you take a walk atCheap Food Alley and Luang Prabang Night Marketwhich is not far from the morning market. There you will experience a variety of affordable foods and a vibrant nighttime atmosphere full of colors and liveliness.
For those who like traveling in northern Laos, I, mr.hotsia, have shared about traveling to Muang Ngoy, not far from Luang Prabang by boat along the Ou River, an experience I encourage you to read inTraveling to Muang Ngoybecause it will help you get an overview of traveling in this region and understand the lifestyle of the people here better.
Finally, Luang Prabang morning market is not just a market for buying fresh goods or food but a connection point of culture, lifestyle, and experiences that I, mr.hotsia, want to recommend everyone visiting this city to experience for themselves. It is the freshness and simplicity hidden in a small town full of authentic Lao charm.
