Khao Pun Kheung Luang Prabang: A Local Flavor That mr.hotsia Must Share
When talking about Luang Prabang, the World Heritage city that I, mr.hotsia, have had the chance to visit many times, one of the unforgettable impressions is the local food here, especially “Khao Pun Kheung,” or as the locals simply call it, Khao Pun Kheung. This dish is not just an ordinary snack but a charm that deeply captivates me about the lifestyle and culture of the people of Luang Prabang.
On my latest visit to Luang Prabang, I received a recommendation from a Facebook friend to try a Khao Pun Kheung shop near Joma Coffee, Luang Prabang branch. This shop is located along the main road, easy to access, and bustling with locals continuously choosing fresh innards.
Choose your innards as you like, 1,000 kip per piece
The special thing about Khao Pun Kheung here is that you can select the innards you want, including tongue, heart, intestines, liver, and many more, at about 1,000 kip per piece, roughly 4 baht. I like to fill the bowl with lots of pieces. The staff will cut the innards into bite-sized pieces and serve them with fresh, perfectly chewy rice noodles before preparing a flavorful broth, which you can choose between clear soup or coconut milk soup.
For me, mr.hotsia, I prefer the clear broth because it tastes refreshing and pairs well with the moderately rich and fragrant innards. Those who enjoy a sweet and creamy flavor might prefer the coconut milk broth, which is equally delightful.
Lifestyle and Morning Market in Luang Prabang
If you have the chance to visit Luang Prabang in the morning, I recommend walking through the morning market here. The Luang Prabang morning market starts at 5:30 AM. It is a fresh market full of fresh vegetables, fruits, fish, frogs, and live toads. The locals still maintain their traditional lifestyle, buying and selling fresh food daily. This market is the heart of the small town of Luang Prabang, preserving the traditional fresh market culture firmly.Luang Prabang Morning MarketIt is a place I often visit every time I arrive.
After walking through the market, I usually continue to the cheap food alley and Luang Prabang Walking Street. Here, you can taste a variety of local foods, including the Khao Pun Kheung I mentioned. The shop I recommend is very popular because many locals come to eat, as well as tourists who visit frequently.Cheap Food Alley and Luang Prabang Walking StreetThis is another spot to experience the true atmosphere and flavors of this city.
Travel and Connections to Other Trips
Luang Prabang is a city with convenient transportation by plane, boat, and car. For me, mr.hotsia, when heading to Thung Hai Hin or Muang Ngoy, I usually use the Southern Bus Station, which is only 1 kilometer from the city, to continue traveling to various towns around Luang Prabang Province.Luang Prabang Southern Bus StationIt is a convenient starting point and also allows me to experience the lifestyle of Lao people in each town I pass through.
Once, when I traveled from Muang Khua to Muang Ngoy, I had to wait for the boat and prepare in advance because the boats are limited. But it was a great experience to enjoy the beautiful views of both sides of the Ou River and to see the riverside villagers’ lives up close.Traveling to Muang NgoyIt is a trip I remember well.
