Luang Prabang Girls... Somtum Luang Prabang
When talking about Luang Prabang as a traveler like me, mr.hotsia, one thing that makes this city as captivating as the Mekong River flowing through it is the charm of local cuisine, especially “Somtum Luang Prabang” which has a clearly distinct taste from Thai somtum. This is the story I experienced from my latest trip to Luang Prabang.
Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage city located in Luang Prabang Province of Laos, is a small town full of temples and the traditional lifestyle of Northern Lao people, including a bustling morning market and a uniquely charming walking street, especially the morning market I once wrote about inLuang Prabang Morning Marketwhich is a hub for high-quality fresh produce, including vegetables, fish, and fresh meat that local people still buy and sell daily.
One morning while strolling through this morning market, I saw Luang Prabang girls holding mortars and pestles, diligently preparing Somtum Lao. Suddenly, I felt an urge to try it because the Somtum here is unlike any other. It’s not overly sweet or spicy like Thai somtum but rather balanced, mildly spicy, pleasantly sour, and has the distinctive aroma of fermented fish sauce.
Luang Prabang’s Somtum uses shredded green papaya mixed with fresh bird’s eye chili, garlic, lime juice, fish sauce, and roasted fermented fish sauce that has been toasted until fragrant. Additionally, it includes roasted peanuts, coriander, and sometimes fresh tomatoes for added freshness. The resulting flavor is a Somtum that is not too intense but refreshingly balanced and delicious with every bite.
I remember once ordering Somtum Lao from a small shop in an alley famous for cheap food in Luang Prabang.Cheap Food Alley and Luang Prabang Walking StreetSitting by the roadside with the cool evening breeze, the taste of Somtum Lao there reminded me of the simple lifestyle of locals who still hold on to their ancient culture despite the city being filled with tourists from all over the world.
Traveling to Luang Prabang is convenient whether by plane or car. If you choose to travel by bus, I recommend learning aboutLuang Prabang Southern Bus Stationwhich is the starting point for trips to southern cities from Luang Prabang, such as Vientiane and Phonsavan. Here, you will experience authentic Lao travel, seeing the difference between air-conditioned and regular buses, as well as the hopeful waiting for buses to depart at uncertain times.
Besides Somtum Lao, Luang Prabang also has a breakfast dish called “Khao Jee” that I once wrote about inKhao Jee, Luang Prabang’s Breakfastwhich you should try for yourself. Here, Khao Jee is grilled until fragrant and crispy, served with various side dishes such as boiled eggs, chili paste, or even simple offal, all equally delicious.
If you have time, don’t miss the boat trip from Khoua town to Ngoy town, which I have described inTraveling to Ngoy TownThis route lets you truly experience nature and the lifestyle of Lao villagers. Upon returning to Luang Prabang, relaxing by the Mekong River with a coffee or Lao beer while tasting the delicious Somtum Lao made by Luang Prabang girls will make you feel that every minute here is more valuable than you imagined.
For me, mr.hotsia, the specialness of Somtum Lao in Luang Prabang is not only in its taste but in the feeling of sharing local food with the locals, seeing the smiles of the girls making somtum with pride in their culture and traditional way of life. That is the true charm of Luang Prabang that I want everyone to experience.
If you want to know Luang Prabang more deeply, whether about food, travel, or lifestyle, I recommend starting with real experiences such as walking the morning market, riding a tuk-tuk around the city, or even participating in the morning sticky rice alms giving. All of these will make you feel that “Luang Prabang” is not just a tourist city but a city full of life and a rich spirit, unforgettable.
Finally, if anyone wants to see the atmosphere and taste of Somtum Lao fresh from Luang Prabang girls, mr.hotsia recommends this video clipLuang Prabang Girls...
