Running up Mount Phousi to watch the evening view of Luang Prabang with mr.hotsia

Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage city full of cultural charm and beautiful nature, is a popular destination for travelers who love tranquility and the beauty of the old town in Laos. Today, mr.hotsia will take everyone to run upMount Phousior as the Lao write it, "Phou Si," to enjoy the stunning evening view of Luang Prabang city that makes you want to raise your camera to capture the memory.

Many who have been to Chiang Mai or Mae Hong Son may be familiar with climbing Doi Suthep or Doi Kong Mu to see the city from a high vantage point. But for Luang Prabang, Mount Phousi is a small hill located in the city center. Climbing to the summit of Mount Phousi does not take long or require much effort like Doi Suthep or Doi Kong Mu. I personally ran up and it took about five minutes only, perfect for those who want a beautiful view quickly.

Running route up Mount Phousi and the temple at the summit

There are several paths to walk or run up Mount Phousi, but the one I chose to run is the northern side next to the Khan River. This route is steeper but full of natural atmosphere and passesWat Phutthabat (Wat Pha Phutthabaht)An ancient temple built since 1395 AD, nearly 600 years ago during the early Ayutthaya period of Thailand.

Upon reaching the temple, there is a small entrance fee collected by staff before continuing to the summit of Mount Phousi, where you will findThat Chom Si Stupastanding tall as a landmark. This stupa was built in 1804 AD and was restored during the reign of King Rama VI of Thailand. It is a symbol of the city and a viewpoint offering panoramic views of Luang Prabang.

mr.hotsia's feelings while running up Mount Phousi

From my real experience, I think this route is not too difficult or tiring. Although it is a bit steep, the distance is very short. The sound of birds and the scent of grass along the way made me feel refreshed. It took just over 5 minutes to run up. No heavy preparation or equipment needed.

At the summit of Mount Phousi, the evening atmosphere is more beautiful than expected. The setting sun casts light on the roofs of temples and old houses of Luang Prabang, creating a beautiful and peaceful high-angle view of the city. This is very different from walking around the morning market or strolling the night walking street.

Connecting with local lifestyle and nearby attractions

After descending from Mount Phousi, I recommend friends to take a walk along the Khan River near the northern exit. The riverside atmosphere in the evening is another impressive memory to keep. Luang Prabang also has an exciting morning marketLuang Prabang Morning Marketselling fresh produce and local vegetables, as well as affordable food alleys and the walking street, which add color to the city.Luang Prabang Walking Streeta must-visit for tourists.

Traveling to Luang Prabang is very convenient by plane, car, or boat. If anyone is interested in continuing their trip, I recommend traveling atLuang Prabang Southern Bus Stationwhich is a connection point to other cities in Laos, such as Muang NgoyTravel to Muang Ngoywhich I have written about before. It is a great opportunity to see the diversity of northern provinces of Laos.

For me, running up Mount Phousi to watch the sunset view of Luang Prabang is an easy and worthwhile experience. You don't need to be a professional runner or a regular exerciser because the route is not long or too steep. It is suitable for all ages who want to see the city view from above without spending much time.

Besides the beautiful view, at the summit of Mount Phousi, you also get to experience That Chom Si Stupa, which has a long history and is important to the people of Luang Prabang. Climbing up and down Mount Phousi can be a frequent activity without boredom because the view changes with light and seasons.
