Boat trip from Nong Khiao to Luang Prabang: The final journey on the Ou River
For me, mr.hotsia, traveling on the Ou River is a unique experience. The last part of this route is a boat trip from Nong Khiao to Luang Prabang, taking about 2 hours. The boat fare is 500 baht. At this stretch, the Ou River has become a large river with no rapids visible anymore. The water flows smoothly but is so wide it almost blends with the sky.
The boats cruising along the Ou River here run parallel to the main road heading to Luang Prabang. I saw excavators working diligently on the river. Some might think they were building resorts or dams, but actually, they were "gold mining." The excavators scoop up soil and sand from the Ou River and put it into sieving machines to extract gold particles. Although the villagers' income is not high, about four to five Lao kip per day, it is a fascinating way of life.
The Ou River mouth and the confluence of two great rivers
After passing the gold mining area, the boat approaches the mouth of the Ou River where it merges with the Mekong River. This area has rocky cliffs and strong currents. The boat driver must be extremely careful. It is an exciting spot for tourists like me and my companions. As the boat enters the Mekong River, the Mekong looks grander and much more powerful than the Ou River. The merging waters create a scene I will always remember. At that moment, I felt truly part of the magnificent nature.
After that, the boat continues along the Mekong River. This route is the same as the boats coming from Huay Sai and Pak Beng. It takes about one hour to reach Luang Prabang. Along both sides of the Mekong here, you can see villages and some sandy beaches. People are swimming and bathing in the Mekong in a simple way. This riverside lifestyle is one I really enjoy.
Arriving in Luang Prabang: mr.hotsia's pride
Finally, I arrived in Luang Prabang in the late afternoon near dusk. A feeling of "Hooray, I made it!" arose in my heart because this was a river journey of several hundred kilometers that I had intended to complete. Luang Prabang is a city with a unique charm, a World Heritage city full of culture and history.
After disembarking, I walked into the alley behind the post office, the same alley as Jok Ma coffee shop. This is where I chose to stay because it is affordable and convenient. There is a guesthouse with cool air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and close to a traditional massage shop. It is perfect for travelers who want to rest and stay connected. After checking in, I quickly checked my emails and prepared to go out for dinner to recharge for the next day in Luang Prabang.
Luang Prabang: A city of culture and night market
After resting and regaining energy on the first day, I started exploring Luang Prabang the next day. From the information I have written before inAffordable food alleys and Luang Prabang night marketWalking around this city is an experience I enjoy. The night market here is full of local products, traditional foods, and handicrafts that deeply reflect Lao culture.
I wandered through small alleys around the Mekong River, admiring well-preserved old-style houses. There are no tall buildings or modern constructions to disturb the view. This route gives a peaceful and magical atmosphere. I met friendly locals and tried many local dishes such asKhao Jee (grilled sticky rice)A unique breakfast of Luang Prabang people. Here, eating Khao Jee is common and usually served with various side dishes.
Travel and convenience in Luang Prabang
For tourists planning to visit Luang Prabang, besides traveling by boat, it is also convenient to travel by plane or car. If traveling by bus, there are two bus stations:Northern Bus Station and Southern Bus StationThe southern station is only 1 kilometer from the city, convenient for traveling to Vientiane or other provinces.
I once traveled from Muang Ngoy to Luang Prabang by the long and challenging river route. If anyone is interested, you can read about my journey atTravel to Muang Ngoywhich provides a clearer overview of the route and lifestyle in this area.
