Ban Ton Phueng Casino, Laos: A Chinese Town Experience in the Golden Triangle

When talking about Ban Ton Phueng, Bokeo Province, Laos, the first name that comes to my mind is “Kings Roman” or The Kings Romans Casino Hotel, a large casino located on Don Sao Island. This is a strategic point opposite Chiang Saen on the Thai side, in an area known as the “Golden Triangle.” This is where the Mekong River meets the Ruak and Khan Rivers, a place not only historically and commercially significant but also a fascinating entertainment and tourist destination.

I, mr.hotsia, arrived here in April 2013. At that time, the Kings Roman Casino was fully operational. The atmosphere around the casino felt like a small Chinese town in Laos. Whether it was the written language, spoken language, or even the shops and restaurants, all were in Chinese, and most people were Chinese visitors coming to gamble and travel.

Atmosphere around the casino and entertainment zone

Around the Kings Roman Casino, there is a medium-sized hotel called “Kapok Hotel” located next door. In front of the hotel is a large fountain plaza, a popular meeting and photo spot for tourists. This zone is filled with shops, restaurants, and a comprehensive nightlife entertainment area. Walking around, I felt like I had stepped into a Chinese city. The decoration and atmosphere were carefully crafted to cater especially to Chinese tourists and gamblers.

If anyone has ever traveled toHuayxai Bus Stationor stopped by the Lao market in Huayxai, you will clearly see that Ban Ton Phueng has an interesting blend of international and Chinese influences. While Huayxai retains its native Lao character, Ban Ton Phueng has fully transformed into a Chinese town within Laos.

Feelings and experiences from the visit

I, mr.hotsia, was amazed by the feeling of traveling to China while still being in Laos. Communication was almost entirely in Chinese. Even the restaurants and menus offered authentic Chinese cuisine. Most restaurants next to the casino sell Chinese food at higher prices, but there is another area less than 200 meters away along the Mekong River where you can find authentic Lao-style made-to-order dishes at more affordable prices, such as stir-fried basil with fried egg for 60 baht per plate. I recommend dining there. You can read more about restaurants in Ban Ton Phueng fromArticle on Restaurants in Ban Ton Phueng

Travel and nearby attractions

For travelers planning to visit Ban Ton Phueng, besides exploring the casino and Chinese town atmosphere, you can also visit other places in Bokeo Province, such as Wat Chom Khao Mani Rat in Huayxai, which is not far from Ban Ton Phueng. This temple is beautiful and offers a clear view of Huayxai town and the Chiang Khong side in Thailand.Read more about Wat Chom Khao Mani RatOr visit ancient stupas and Buddha statues over 1,000 years old atWat Don Savan, Ban Ton Phuengwhich is another place I, mr.hotsia, recommend stopping by.

For traveling to Ban Ton Phueng, I suggest starting from Huayxai, which has a bus station and interesting morning and evening markets.Huayxai morning and evening marketsThese markets showcase the lifestyle and culture of authentic Lao people. From Huayxai, you can easily take a songthaew or tuk-tuk to Ban Ton Phueng.

mr.hotsia's personal thoughts

Walking around and experiencing the atmosphere in Ban Ton Phueng, I felt like I crossed the border into China without needing a visa. The modernity of the casino, the vibrancy of the Chinese town in Laos, and the friendliness of the locals who have not forgotten their roots are the charms that make Ban Ton Phueng distinctly different from other small towns in Laos. Although it is not a natural or traditional Lao cultural tourist town, it is interesting for its cultural transition and diversity worth studying.

If you plan to visit Ban Ton Phueng, I recommend spending one or two nights to fully experience the casino atmosphere, nearby attractions, and explore both Chinese and Lao food scenes, as well as capture the perfectly blended lifestyle in your memories.
