Don Sao Island, Ban Ton Phueng, Laos: The land of red Bombax flowers and remarkable changes

Speaking of my journey, mr.hotsia traveled to Laos in Bokeo Province. This time, I chose a destination not far from the Thai border, which is “Don Sao Island” in Ton Phueng district, a large island in the middle of the Mekong River with a unique charm that I must share with friends.

Don Sao Island is famous for its wild Bombax flower fields that bloom bright red across the entire island during the flowering season. Every year, the “Bombax Flower Festival” is held, where locals and tourists gather to celebrate this beauty. There is also a Miss Bombax contest, adding vibrant life to Don Sao Island. Although the Bombax flower looks similar to the kapok flower, they are different species. During this season, the island is ablaze with red flowers.

Crossing from the Thai side at Chiang Saen, I took a two-section long-tail boat that goes directly to Don Sao Island without needing a temporary passport, though a small fee is charged at the pier. This time, the island was quieter than expected, possibly because the Bombax flowers had not fully bloomed yet. There are many shops selling inexpensive handbags similar to those found in Mae Sai, Thailand.

Interestingly, Don Sao Island is a concession area leased for 99 years by Dok Ngiew Kham Company, a Chinese investment group, to develop a comprehensive economic zone including hotels, casinos, markets, and a large duty-free shopping complex planned for the future. This means Don Sao Island will soon undergo rapid transformation.

Ton Phueng Town: A small town rich in ethnic groups and culture

Ton Phueng Town, the location of Don Sao Island, is a place I have previously described in detail inthe Ban Ton Phueng travel articlePreviously, this town is located opposite Chiang Saen district, Chiang Rai province, just across the Mekong River. It is a fascinating connection point between the two countries.

Ton Phueng covers over 700 square kilometers with a population of more than 26,700 people. It is home to over 10 ethnic groups such as Lao, Lue, Yuan, Tai Dam, Northern Tai, Hmong, Iu Mien, Khmu, Akha, and Lahu. Each group has its own unique lifestyle and culture worth studying. The Lue people make up the largest proportion at about 36%, followed by Lao at 18%, and Lahu at 16%.

During my visit to Ban Ton Phueng, the first impression was that the town remains peaceful and simple, despite the beginning of development with casinos and economic zones on Don Sao Island. Traveling from Ban Ton Phueng to other nearby places such asHuay Sai Bus Stationor visiting the morning and evening markets in Huay Sai, a nearby town, is convenient by tuk-tuk minibus at reasonable prices.

Local lifestyle and food in Ban Ton Phueng

Eating in Ban Ton Phueng is an experience mr.hotsia highly recommends. The main town has two large food zones: one is the Chinese food area near the casino, which is relatively expensive and focuses on fresh seafood, mostly catering to Chinese casino visitors. The second zone is by the Mekong River, about 200 meters from the casino, offering authentic Lao-style made-to-order dishes at affordable prices with great taste. I often eat here, especially the stir-fried basil rice with fried egg, priced at only 60 baht but served in generous portions with rich flavor.

For breakfast, I recommend a pho shop just past Ban Ton Phueng High School. This shop serves hot pho, larb, nam tok, and authentic Lao dishes that truly reflect local life.

Visit the ancient stupa in the middle of the Mekong River at Wat Don Sawan

If you visit Ban Ton Phueng, I recommend stopping byWat Don Sawanwhich houses an ancient stupa discovered in the Mekong River in 2010. The stupa is thousands of years old, and ancient Buddha statues, Takian wood, and a 500-year-old ancient well were also found within the temple grounds. Visiting this temple offers not only tranquility but also deep insight into local history and culture.

Traveling to Wat Don Sawan is easy by renting a tuk-tuk from Ban Ton Phueng. It is recommended to visit the early morning market first, then pay respects at the temple to complete a full travel experience.

Travel and tourism experience in Bokeo area

For friends interested in traveling to Don Sao Island and Ban Ton Phueng, I, mr.hotsia, share that the most convenient starting point is from the Thai side at Chiang Khong to Huay Sai, Bokeo Province. You can take a long-tail boat across the Mekong River, and there are buses from Huay Sai to other towns in Bokeo such as Luang Namtha or Ton Phueng itself. For more details aboutHuay Sai Bus Stationand the local transport system, I have written about it in a previous article.

Additionally, visiting the morning and evening markets of Huay Sai before crossing to Ban Ton Phueng allows you to truly experience the lifestyle of the Lao people in Bokeo Province. I personally enjoy waking early to walk through the fresh market as I have described inHuay Sai Morning and Evening Marketsbecause it is the best place to understand the culture and local cuisine.

Summary of impressions from mr.hotsia

This trip to Don Sao Island and Ban Ton Phueng was an experience unlike any other. The beauty of the red Bombax flowers covering the island, the tranquility that still exists despite rapid development, and the chance to experience the lifestyle of many Lao ethnic groups here.

If you enjoy peace, nature, and want to witness the upcoming changes in this border area of Laos, visiting Don Sao Island and Ban Ton Phueng is a very interesting choice. Don’t forget to try local food, find snacks at riverside shops along the Mekong, and pay respects at Wat Don Sawan to make your trip complete.
