Huayxai Bus Station: The Starting Point for Travel to Bokeo Province, Laos
Hello friends, this is mr.hotsia. Today, I want to share my real travel experience at Huayxai Bus Station, a small town by the Mekong River in Bokeo Province, Laos. Many may have heard the name but never explored the lifestyle and travel here in detail. I had the chance to cross the border from Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province, and spent two full days exploring Huayxai before continuing my journey to Luang Namtha.
Traveling from Chiang Khong to Huayxai and the Atmosphere Around the Bus Station
After completing immigration procedures at the Chiang Khong-Huayxai border checkpoint (where I previously described the morning and evening market atmosphere in this town in an article)Huayxai Morning and Evening Markets, I traveled into Huayxai, a small but lively town with the beautiful simplicity typical of authentic Lao people.
Huayxai Bus Station is located about 3 kilometers south of the town center. Following Lao custom, bus stations are usually set 3-5 kilometers away from the city center. This station serves as a central hub for travel to various towns in Bokeo Province and nearby provinces.
I took a tuk-tuk from the town center to the bus station for 10,000 kip (about 40 baht), which is a standard price throughout Laos. It was affordable and convenient. Along the way, I saw the local villagers' lifestyle by the roadside, which is quite similar to the Chiang Khong side in Thailand.
Bus Service Between Huayxai and Luang Namtha: The New Route I Chose
For me, planning to continue to Luang Namtha, taking the regular bus from Huayxai Bus Station was the most convenient option. After asking the staff and locals, I found there are two departures daily: 9 AM and 12:30 PM. I chose the afternoon trip because I didn’t want to wake up too early.
The route from Huayxai to Luang Namtha takes about 4-5 hours, covering approximately 195 kilometers. The fare is 55,000 kip, or about 220 baht. Considering the distance and the mountainous, winding roads, I think this price is reasonable.
The bus runs straight with only two stops for bathroom breaks. There are no stops for meals along the way. Therefore, I recommend bringing your own food and water from Huayxai to avoid hunger during the trip. The bus station area itself has limited food options, only small noodle dishes or pho to ease hunger.
Lifestyle and Food Around Huayxai Bus Station
The bus station here is unlike those in big cities with many food stalls. Around the station, there are small local eateries mainly selling pho and sticky rice. If you want a full meal, you should buy food in Huayxai town before traveling. Here, Lao people eat sticky rice as their staple food, reflecting the simplicity and warmth of local meals.
After exploring Huayxai town, I also traveled to a nearby village called Ban Tonphueng, which I previously described inTraveling to Ban Tonphueng, Laos, a town with diverse cultures and ethnic groups, as well as stunning views of the Mekong River.
Alternative Travel Option by Boat from Huayxai
Another interesting option for travelers wanting to fully experience the Mekong River atmosphere is traveling by boat to Luang Prabang, with choices of slow boat and speed boat.
The slow boat takes about 2 days and 1 night, costing around 20 USD. It stops overnight at Pak Beng, suitable for those not in a hurry and wanting to truly experience life along the Mekong River. The speed boat takes about 6 hours, costing 28 USD, but I do not recommend it because it is uncomfortable and risky due to strong waves.
Summary of Experience and Recommendations from mr.hotsia
From my experience at Huayxai Bus Station, I felt the simplicity of Lao life here, the warmth of the people, and the charm of unhurried travel unlike big cities. I recommend preparing well for long trips, as the bus stops rarely, and bringing your own food and water.
