Wat Chom Khao Mani Rat: A peaceful spot on a high hill in Huayxai town
When talking about Huayxai, Bokeo Province, Laos, located opposite Chiang Khong District, Chiang Rai Province, many people probably think of the border checkpoint or the great Mekong River flowing through. But for me, mr.hotsia, the destination that impressed me was not just the checkpoint or the Mekong River, but “Wat Chom Khao Mani Rat,” an ancient temple located on a high hilltop with panoramic views of Huayxai town and even the Chiang Khong side of Thailand.
Wat Chom Khao Mani Rat is not just a typical tourist spot known for its beautiful architecture, but a temple that still strongly preserves the community’s way of life. I arrived in Huayxai after experiencing the atmosphere of the local morning and evening markets here (for more detailed insights, I recommend reading the articleMorning and evening markets of Huayxai locals)
Climbing hundreds of steps to Wat Chom Khao Mani Rat
The journey up to Wat Chom Khao Mani Rat can be done either by climbing hundreds of steps or by car, which can reach the hilltop. I chose to walk some parts to feel the surrounding atmosphere and see local villagers making merit according to their traditions. Because the temple is located on a high hill, the atmosphere is cool almost all year round, unlike Huayxai town below. From here, you can also see the Mekong River and Chiang Khong town from a high vantage point that is hard to find elsewhere.
What caught my eye was the temple’s architectural style, similar to Wat Phra Min in Nan Province, Thailand, but with a distinct feature: the temple roof is decorated with naga serpents instead of swans like temples in Myanmar. This clearly shows the Lao cultural influence closely related to northern Thailand. Also, this temple does not have a crematorium within its grounds like most temples in Thailand, which is another difference I learned from this trip.
Atmosphere on Buddhist holy days at Wat Chom Khao Mani Rat
I arrived at the temple on the morning of the 8th lunar day, a Buddhist holy day when Lao people make merit intensely, similar to Thai traditions. Especially the people of Huayxai who still firmly maintain this custom. What impressed me was the announcement through the temple’s loudspeaker informing villagers about the merit-making activities that day, reflecting the strong bond between the community and the temple. I quickly dressed in white according to tradition and hurried up to the temple. Although tiring, it was very worthwhile.
Upon reaching the top, I saw villagers sitting quietly and orderly waiting to offer alms in front of the ordination hall. Here, they use sticky rice for alms, similar to Luang Prabang and other provinces in Laos. I hadn’t prepared sticky rice, but luckily I sat next to Mae Chan Kaew, a kind villager who invited me to join the alms offering, allowing me to truly experience the lifestyle and faith of Huayxai people.
Feelings and reflections from the journey
Although Wat Chom Khao Mani Rat has fewer monks than Luang Prabang, its atmosphere and sacredness are filled with a unique charm and warmth hard to find elsewhere. I think the peace and simplicity of this temple attract cultural travelers like me very well. Moreover, Huayxai itself is a good connecting point for tourists wanting to experience authentic Lao life and to continue traveling to other attractions in Bokeo Province, such as Ban Ton Phueng, which I have written about in the articleTraveling to Ban Ton Phueng, LaosOr try local food atRestaurants in Ban Ton Phuengare also great options.
For anyone planning to visit Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province, I recommend taking a boat from the Bak Pier to visit Huayxai and stopping by to make merit at Wat Chom Khao Mani Rat at least once. I guarantee you will experience a different side from the usual tourist atmosphere.
Travel information and some tips
Getting to Wat Chom Khao Mani Rat is convenient by car or on foot. Don’t forget to prepare suitable shoes for climbing stairs, or if you want to save energy, you can take a car up to the temple. There are also facilities for tourists and locals making merit at the temple.
If you have time, I recommend waking up early to visit the Huayxai morning market before paying respects at the temple to fully see local life. And if you want to try delicious local food, don’t miss the evening market in Huayxai town as well.
