Travel to Ban Ton Phueng, Bokeo Province, Laos with mr.hotsia
Ban Ton Phueng is a small town located opposite Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. Just cross the Mekong River and you will reach Ban Ton Phueng in Bokeo Province, Laos. I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to visit this town myself. I must say it is a fascinating place with rich cultural diversity, home to 10 ethnic groups including Lao, Lue, Yuan, Tai Dam, Northern Thai, Hmong, Iu Mien, Khmu, Akha, and Lahu, each with unique identities and lifestyles.
Ban Ton Phueng covers over 715 square kilometers with a population of about 26,700 people, divided into 50 villages. The Lue people form the largest group at 36%, followed by Lao at 18%, and Lahu at 16%, mixed with other tribes making up about 30%. I believe the charm of Ban Ton Phueng is not just its nature or casinos, but the chance to witness the diverse lifestyles of these ethnic groups.
Atmosphere and Changes in Ban Ton Phueng
Ban Ton Phueng has become more well-known in the past 3-4 years after a major Chinese investor, Zhao Wei, leased this area and Don Sao Island for 99 years, developing it into a comprehensive ASEAN economic and tourism zone including casinos, hotels, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The investment exceeded 3 billion USD, officially launched on September 9, 2009, at 09:09 AM, a lucky number in Chinese culture.
This area has thus become a Chinese-style town in Laos, with shop signs in Chinese, most people speaking Chinese, and many Chinese tourists enjoying the entertainment. I, mr.hotsia, visited the casino and Kapok Hotel nearby in this zone and saw many Chinese women strolling at night. The atmosphere felt like being in China itself. However, Lao people and Thai tourists still rarely visit this zone as it feels like a space mainly for Chinese visitors.
Getting to Ban Ton Phueng
Traveling to Ban Ton Phueng is convenient by several routes. If you are in Chiang Saen District, Chiang Rai Province, you can get a temporary border pass to cross the Mekong River to Ban Ton Phueng checkpoint without much hassle. Alternatively, you can enter via Huay Xai town in Bokeo Province and take a local minibus from Huay Xai to Ban Ton Phueng, about 50 kilometers.
Be cautious because Ban Ton Phueng itself does not have public transport or motorcycle taxis like other towns. Tourists need to rent a small minibus for about 500 baht per trip to travel from the border checkpoint to the casino and accommodation zones. For a more relaxed trip, you can take a long-tail boat from Chiang Saen directly to Don Sao Island without a border pass, just paying a fee at the pier. The boat fare is about 500 baht per trip.
Don Sao Island: A Must-Visit Destination
Don Sao Island is a large island in the Mekong River within Ban Ton Phueng area, famous for the kapok trees blooming across the island during the kapok flower season. This period hosts an annual festival and a Miss Kapok Flower contest. I, mr.hotsia, experienced this time and can say the red kapok flowers covering the island create a truly breathtaking sight.
This island is also part of the long-term concession project by the Chinese investor, developed into a complete economic and entertainment zone with hotels, casinos, and a large duty-free market, similar to Mae Sai on the Thai side. However, the atmosphere here is quieter and blends Lao culture harmoniously.Don Sao Island, Ban Ton Phueng, LaosIt is another destination I highly recommend friends to experience.
What to Eat in Ban Ton Phueng?
Regarding food in Ban Ton Phueng, it is somewhat scarce, especially for Thais used to Thai flavors. The casino zone has many Chinese restaurants focusing on fresh seafood like squid, shrimp, and fresh fish, often ordered by Chinese casino visitors to cook themselves. Prices are quite high and not very suitable for general tourists.
I, mr.hotsia, recommend trying food along the Mekong riverside zone, about 200 meters from the casino. There are affordable authentic Lao-style made-to-order restaurants serving dishes like fried rice with basil and fried egg for about 60 baht per plate, with generous portions of rice and meat. They also offer spicy traditional dishes like larb and nam tok. In the morning, try the pho at a roadside stall just past Ban Ton Phueng High School. I tried it and liked it; it offers genuine Lao cuisine.Restaurants in Ban Ton Phueng, LaosRight here
Visiting Nearby Temples and Markets
If you visit Ban Ton Phueng, I, mr.hotsia, recommend stopping by Wat Don Sawan, located about 5 kilometers from town. It features an ancient stupa over a thousand years old that was excavated from the middle of the Mekong River during dry season, ancient Buddha statues found in the crypt, old takian wood, and a 500-year-old ancient well. It is a must-visit site for Buddhists.Stupa from the middle of the Mekong River, Wat Don Sawan, Ban Ton Phueng, Laos
You can also visit the morning and evening markets in Huay Xai town nearby, where you can see authentic Lao lifestyles with fresh produce, vegetables, fruits, and local foods available for purchase. This completes the full Laos travel experience.Morning and Evening Markets of Huay Xai PeopleIt is another place I visited and was impressed by.
