Grilled Duck at Khong Waeb Huayxai: Authentic Lao grilled duck flavor in Bokeo Province

I, mr.hotsia, had the chance to revisit Huayxai town, Bokeo Province, Laos again in April 2011. This time I was not traveling alone but brought my “nephew” along because he is learning photography. I took the opportunity to capture the atmosphere and local food flavors. Our destination this time was a famous grilled duck restaurant well known among locals as “Khong Waeb” or fully “Khong Waeb Huayxai.”

Many might wonder what makes the grilled duck here special. Actually, in Laos, the term “grilled duck” does not strictly mean selling only duck but refers to general grilled meat shops featuring duck as the main menu. This restaurant stands out for its grilled duck and various duck dishes, especially the duck blood which I tried and must say is excellent. The salty, rich, and balanced flavor pairs perfectly with the crispy hot grilled duck and the intensely flavored duck salad. It’s a must-try eating experience.

The atmosphere at Khong Waeb is simple and homely, with wooden tables arranged comfortably for customers. I noticed almost every table ordered Lao beer to accompany their meal, so I, mr.hotsia, didn’t hesitate to order a cold Lao beer as well. I can say grilled duck and Lao beer are truly a perfect pair. This place is not just a restaurant but a local gathering spot where people hang out after work or in the evening before heading home.

Traveling to Huayxai and Nearby Attractions

If you are planning to visit Huayxai in Bokeo Province, I recommend checking outHuayxai Bus Stationto plan your trip first. The bus station is about 3 kilometers from the town center. Traveling from Chiang Khong, Chiang Rai Province, Thailand to Huayxai is very convenient. You can take a tuk-tuk from Chiang Khong town, cross the Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge through immigration, then continue by tuk-tuk into Huayxai town.

When you stop by Khong Waeb restaurant, don’t forget to visitHuayxai Morning-Evening Marketwhich is not far from the town center. This market is the heart of the community where you can see authentic Lao lifestyle up close, including buying fresh vegetables and fruits, local food, and daily necessities. Strolling through the market in the morning or evening and then returning to enjoy hot grilled duck at Khong Waeb is a complete experience of flavor and culture.

Flavors and Signature Dishes at Khong Waeb

The dish I, mr.hotsia, was most impressed with is the grilled duck with crispy skin and tender juicy meat. The richly marinated sauce and the aroma of charcoal add charm to the duck meat. There is also “duck salad” which is spicy and slightly sour, refreshing to eat. A must-have is the “duck blood,” which many say is the signature dish here. The duck blood is salty and creamy, so addictive that you want to order more every time.

I, mr.hotsia, enjoyed my meal while observing the lively atmosphere of local customers dining unhurriedly. It vividly tells the story of Huayxai life. And of course, Lao beer adds refreshment on hot days. I highly recommend ordering Lao beer to drink with grilled duck because they really go well together.

Connections to Nearby Attractions and Culture

After enjoying grilled duck at Khong Waeb, if you have time, don’t forget to pay a visit toWat Chom Khao Mani RatOne of Huayxai’s ancient temples located on a high hill with beautiful views of Huayxai town and Chiang Khong across the river. This temple is not only a spiritual center for local Lao people but also a must-visit natural viewpoint for travelers who enjoy peace and panoramic scenes.

If you want to explore further, I, mr.hotsia, recommend visiting the morning-evening market mentioned earlier or if you want to try other local dishes in Bokeo Province, tryBan Tonphueng Restaurantwhich is not far from Huayxai. There you will find authentic Lao food with good taste and affordable prices, suitable for those who want to sample a variety of local community dishes.

Summary of mr.hotsia’s Experience

For me, mr.hotsia, visiting Khong Waeb Huayxai was not just about enjoying delicious food but experiencing the true lifestyle of Lao people through simple yet extraordinary grilled duck dishes and the warm community atmosphere. Coming here reminded me of the connected journey between Chiang Khong and Huayxai, seeing similarities and differences of the two sides of the Mekong River located close to each other.

If you visit Bokeo Province and pass through Huayxai, don’t forget to try grilled duck at Khong Waeb. I guarantee you will taste authentic Lao flavors and experience the friendliness of the locals.
