Recommended Hotels in Luang Prabang Support Exciting Travel Book Hotels Here From Muang Ngoi I took a boat departing at 09:30 AM, traveling to Nong Khiaw for 1 hour, costing 20,000 kip (80 baht). Both riverbanks were calm with nothing exciting. The Ou River gradually widens. Soon we arrived at Nong Khiaw. From Nong Khiaw, I planned to continue by boat to Luang Prabang, but there were not enough passengers, missing 5 more people, so I had to wait and find more people during the free time.
I jumped on a motorcycle to survey Nong Khiaw town to see what it has to offer. Nong Khiaw is a small, peaceful town on the west bank of the Ou River. Nong Khiaw has schools up to grade 12. It is much bigger than Muang Ngoi. Some accommodations offer WIFI internet service. Food and lodging in Nong Khiaw are cheaper than other towns I have stayed in. The back road of Nong Khiaw is still a dirt road.
Passing by the school, I took a motorcycle taxi to the school and captured the daytime atmosphere of Nong Khiaw to share. In Muang Ngoi, I met tourists from Thailand, which made me happy. The boat left Muang Ngoi heading to Nong Khiaw. After getting off the motorcycle, I strolled back to the pier, bought some snacks, and greeted the children. Most houses in Nong Khiaw are wooden with wooden pillars; I did not see any concrete houses.
People smiled warmly, and the students were especially friendly to tourists. Unfortunately, I had limited time here because I had to continue to Luang Prabang. My goal was to complete the boat trip from Phongsali to Luang Prabang. According to the map, the boat fare from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang is about 500 baht and takes 5 hours. However, by car, the fare is only 200 baht, and the car will drop you off at your accommodation.
But I chose to take the boat to capture the scenery before this route becomes just a legend. The little children walking home were adorable. Nowadays, traveling in Laos is not as difficult as before. Traveling anywhere is convenient with more options. For example, from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang, there are minivan queues waiting at the pier at affordable prices. When the minivan is full, special vans are available at similar prices.
The main minivan queue in Luang Prabang is opposite the Vientiane bus queue. Vans there offer trips from Luang Prabang to Xiangkhouang, prices from Luang Prabang to Luang Namtha 100,000 kip, from Luang Prabang to Oudomxay 50,000 kip. There are also vans from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang and vice versa for 50,000 kip, same as the minivan fare, dropping you off at your accommodation for convenience. For those interested in Laos van services, contact Khun Kaew at Laos phone number 2958999.
You can inquire or arrange private hire with them. Don't hesitate to try the delicious food called 'Kai Hong' by locals. At Nong Khiaw pier, next to the boat ticket office, there is a pho and made-to-order food stall. Prices here are reasonable compared to other towns. I ordered one bowl of pho, followed by a plate of fried pork rice, and a bottle of Coke. Next meal will be in Luang Prabang, though I don't know what time I'll arrive. mr.hotsia recommends hotels in Luang Prabang and the night market at Nong Khiaw pier.
Students return from school at midday and will attend afternoon classes. At Nong Khiaw pier, I am waiting for enough people to continue the boat trip to Luang Prabang. One hour before arriving at Nong Khiaw, there is a small rapid, then the Nong Khiaw bridge. Arrived at Nong Khiaw pier. The boat to Luang Prabang is ready. Vehicles wait to pick up passengers from Nong Khiaw to Luang Prabang for 200 baht, dropping off at accommodations. Pho is cheap at 10,000 kip. No betel nut chewing as in Thailand's vehicle queues.
Tourists waiting for the boat to Luang Prabang. I walked to find a restroom and took photos of houses in Nong Khiaw. I hailed a motorcycle taxi to the school and took photos of Nong Khiaw school, the school sign, the main road of Nong Khiaw, stopped to buy snacks, houses in Nong Khiaw, and the main street of Nong Khiaw.
