Visakha Bucha Day candlelight procession, backpacking in Luang Prabang, hotel recommendations in Luang Prabang, support fun travel by booking hotels here, Luang Prabang is a main tourist city of Laos. Traveling to Luang Prabang is convenient by plane, boat, or car. By car, if taking public transport, there are two bus stations: the Northern Bus Station and the Southern Bus Station. The Northern Bus Station is 4 kilometers from downtown. This northern route goes north to Muang Xai.

Phongsaly. The Southern Bus Station is 1 km from town. The Southern Bus Station serves routes south to Vientiane, Phonsavan, and Xiangkhoang. For me, I was going to Thung Haihin, so I traveled to the Southern Bus Station. When traveling by public bus, you should understand that schedules are not fixed and depend on the number of passengers. Stops vary, and buses often do not depart on time. If many goods are loaded, departure is delayed. Don't worry about the timing.

It is best to check the latest bus schedule at the station every time as it can change anytime. Buses from Luang Prabang to Vientiane cost about 300 baht for a regular bus and take 11 hours. There are 5-8 trips daily. Air-conditioned buses cost 340 baht, also taking 11 hours, with 2 trips daily. Air-conditioned buses depart in the morning and arrive in Vientiane in the evening. Buses from Luang Prabang to Vang Vieng also depart from the Southern Bus Station.

Regular buses to Vang Vieng cost 255 baht and take 6-7 hours. Air-conditioned buses cost 290 baht and take the same time. Air-conditioned buses depart at 6:30 and 9:00 AM, arriving in Vang Vieng in the evening. Actually, for those traveling from Luang Prabang to Vientiane who want more convenience and dislike public buses, you can contact local travel agencies in Luang Prabang to arrange transport to Vientiane.

For vans, the price is 600 baht per person and takes only 8 hours. There are also VIP buses costing 400 baht, taking 10 hours, with two trips daily. These buses must be booked in advance due to high demand and easy full capacity, unlike regular buses which never sell out. Buses from Luang Prabang to Oudomxay, Luang Namtha, and Phongsaly depart from the Northern Bus Station. The bus from Luang Prabang to Oudomxay runs once daily, costs 170 baht, and departs at 8:00 AM.

The trip takes 5 hours. Buses from Luang Prabang to Luang Namtha cost 240 baht, take 8 hours, and depart at 9:00 AM and 4:50 PM daily. Buses from Luang Prabang to Phongsaly cost 340 baht, depart at 2:00 PM, and take 15 hours. Traveling to Sam Neua can be done by two routes by bus. The first is from the Northern Bus Station to Nong Khieo, costing 110 baht and taking 4 hours, with 4 trips daily. From Luang Prabang to Sam Neua via Nong Khieo costs 340 baht and takes 16 hours, departing at 4:00 PM.

The other way I traveled to Sam Neua was via Xiangkhoang to visit Thung Haihin first, then took another bus from Xiangkhoang to Sam Neua. Buses from Luang Prabang to Phonsavan (Xiangkhoang - Thung Haihin) run once daily, departing at 8:30 AM. Buses from Luang Prabang to Xayaburi, Huay Sai (opposite Chiang Khong), Luang Prabang to Xayaburi - Muang Xay cost 130 baht, take 5 hours, and depart at 9:00 AM. Buses to Huay Sai cost 500 baht, take 8-11 hours, and depart at 5:00 PM.

To make it easier to understand how many hours buses take from Luang Prabang to various cities, I summarize the travel times in the map below. Map of travel times between Luang Prabang and various cities.

The times I provided above are approximate; sometimes faster, sometimes slower. Laos cities have flexible timing. Buses in Laos are privately operated, not government or joint buses (according to station inquiries). Therefore, it is not unusual that when full, they still sell standing tickets if passengers want to stand. For example, buses from Huay Sai to Luang Namtha and Luang Prabang are always full during long Thai holidays. In the last 3 years, more Thai people have traveled independently in Laos.

My travel plan today is to leave Luang Prabang for Muang Pak, Xiangkhoang Province, where Thung Haihin is located. The bus departs at around 9 AM. Actually, it left a bit after 9. Few people travel this route, so the bus was not full and comfortable. Ready to depart. Follow along to see what I encounter next. mr.hotsia May. mr.hotsia recommends hotels in Luang Prabang. Travel map from Luang Prabang to Muang Pak, Xiangkhoang, Sam Neua. Follow me to see how far I get; now I am leaving Luang Prabang.

On the way, I took a tuk-tuk to Luang Prabang Southern Bus Station. Ticket seller staff at Luang Prabang Southern Bus Station. The bus I will take to Xiangkhoang. Atmosphere at Luang Prabang Southern Bus Station. Passing by this bus to Vientiane. Nice angle, so I took a photo including my camera for those interested. The journey is about to begin. Ticket counter. There are buses from Luang Prabang to Khun Min as well. Atmosphere inside the bus before boarding. This bus will take me to Phonsavan. Northern Bus Station. Food stalls at the station.

The bus will refuel nearby before departure. The last person selling after this will not come again.
