The Irrawaddy dolphin is a freshwater dolphin first discovered in Myanmar, which is where it got its name. In Laos, you can also see these dolphins. If you visit Li Phi and drive towards the end of Don Khon, there are boats available for rent to see the dolphins. The boat rental costs 60,000 kip per boat, seating 4 people. If you go alone, it’s still 60,000 kip.

No discounts are given. I rode a motorcycle to Li Phi and then continued to see the dolphins in the late afternoon. Luckily, I met one Japanese tourist, so we split the cost to 30,000 kip or 120 baht each. The dolphin viewing spot is on the border with Cambodia. Tourists have two options: either take the boat around the Laos side and hope to see dolphins, or if you want to be sure to see them, you must cross to the Cambodia side. Crossing the Mekong River to Cambodia costs 1 USD per person for the boat ride.

That’s about 30 baht. Mostly, I think it’s better to pay and be sure to see them. There are many dolphins here, especially in the Cambodian area. The boat ride is limited to 1 hour to allow ample time to watch the dolphins and also to stroll around Cambodia, adding another travel experience. According to the boat operators, the best time to see dolphins is in the late afternoon, but that means returning in the dark. I finished watching the dolphins just as it got dark and had to ride my motorcycle back to Don Det in the dark, which is about 6 kilometers.

The roads are not very good but are under construction. My Japanese travel companion had to cycle back alone in the dark without lights and fell into potholes several times. So, if you return at night, bring a light for safety or plan to visit in the morning and come back, then visit Li Phi later.
