Getting to Champasak and Wat Phu Temple http://www.hotsia.com > Travel Pakse Champasak > Getting to Champasak and Wat Phu Temple Traveling to Wat Phu Temple or visiting Champasak on your own. Champasak is the name of the province with Pakse as its capital city. When we say traveling to Champasak, it means the town of Champasak located south of Pakse at kilometer marker __. Champasak has a World Heritage tourist site, which is Wat Phu Temple. Today, there are three route options to get to Champasak.

The first way is by bus or driving yourself. I will start from Pakse because traveling from Ubon to Pakse via Chong Mek is straightforward. From Pakse, take a bus at the southern bus station. If going south from Pakse, take the Don Khong line or any bus passing marker 30, get off there and wait for a boat to cross to Champasak. This is called __. After crossing the Mekong River, you arrive at Champasak. Then take a motorcycle taxi to your accommodation. The boat crossing fee is 5,000 kip per person.
If you take a motorcycle on the boat, the fee is 10,000 kip. Alternatively, there is a bus from Dao Rueang Market to Ban Muang, but I am not sure about the departure times. The second route is by boat from Pakse to Champasak, but almost no one uses this route now because it is expensive and dangerous. I do not recommend it; land travel is better. The third route is a new road from Chong Mek to Pakse. About 6 kilometers before the Mekong River bridge, there is a road cutting straight to Champasak. This was written in December 2010.
My writing about staying in Champasak is not finished yet. For those who bring their own car, it is easy. Drive south and at the intersection near Plak 10, turn right. Drive another 20 kilometers to the Ban Muang junction where there is a ferry to cross to Champasak. You can take your car across and drive on. For those arriving by bus, once in Champasak, there are two options: rent a motorcycle for 80,000 kip per day or rent a bicycle for 10,000 kip per day to ride around and visit Wat Phu. If you travel independently and stay in Champasak,
I recommend visiting Wat Phu either early in the morning or in the afternoon when the sun is not strong. It is a comfortable trip and cycling is pleasant without heat. In summary, traveling independently to Champasak / Wat Phu by bus: from Bangkok, take a bus to Ubon Ratchathani. Then take a bus from Ubon Bus Terminal to Pakse, which runs twice daily, morning and afternoon. From Pakse, there are several buses from the southern bus station heading south such as Nakasang or Don Khong lines. Get off at marker 31.
There are motorcycle taxis that are not regular but definitely available. Go to Ban Muang pier, just a few kilometers away, the price is about 10,000 kip. There are piers for large and small vehicles. If crossing on foot, use the big pier; the crossing fee to Champasak side is 5,000 kip per person. Upon arrival in Champasak, find accommodation or take a motorcycle taxi to the roundabout and walk from there. I stayed at Ruean Pak Sai Thong. Wat Phu Temple is 6 kilometers from Champasak town. Most people rent bicycles for 10,000 kip per day to visit Wat Phu.
(See directions to Champasak here) Another option from Pakse is from Dao Rueang Market, there is a large songthaew going to Ban Tha Muang. You can cross the boat at Tha Muang pier to Champasak. I have not tried this route because I traveled from Don Khong and got off at marker 31, then took a motorcycle taxi. In summary, estimated travel expenses to visit Wat Phu and Champasak independently are
Bus from Bangkok to Ubon 700 / Bus from Ubon to Pakse 200 / Pakse to Tha Muang about 80 / Boat crossing 20 / Motorcycle taxi to accommodation 40 / Bicycle rental 40. Total travel cost from Bangkok to Wat Phu is approximately __. Once here, there are many other places to visit, which I have shown as examples. See my Pakse travel information and follow along. mr.hotsia recommends hotels at Don Khong nearby. Getting to Champasak
