Fishing on the Mekong River in Champasak http://www.hotsia.com > Travel Pakse Champasak > Fishing on the Mekong River in Champasak When traveling in Thailand, I have gone fishing by boat at Kwan Phayao and sometimes out to the sea at canals. Now that I have come to Champasak city, I took the opportunity to go fishing on the Mekong River with the locals immediately. Champasak is a city along the Mekong River, stretching along the riverbank. The locals plant just enough vegetables and herbs for their own consumption along the riverbank.

One of the occupations of people living along the Mekong River is fishing in the river. There are three types of Mekong fishing here. The first is using a fishing line underwater with leaf bait from the riverbank. The fish caught are mainly carp species. The second is underwater trapping which catches various types of fish including catfish and mouse fish. The last method is net or trap fishing called "Mong" by the Lao people. The fish traps seen at Phi traps are set in fast-flowing water, unlike the still water here in Champasak.

I woke up early at Sangthong guesthouse and coincidentally met the Champasak locals I had talked to yesterday who were going fishing by boat. The sunlight was beautifully golden. The weather was starting to get cold and the atmosphere along the Mekong River was wonderful. I went fishing with them, watched them check the fishing lines (to see if fish were caught), checked the traps (to see if fish entered), and the nets or Mong traps. Today was not an early wind day, so only one fish was caught, unlike yesterday when they caught many fish and even sold them.

The fish caught, if not many, are just enough for daily consumption. If there are many, they are sold to restaurants or by walking around selling on the streets. There is no market in Champasak, so they sell as a mobile market by cart or on foot. After getting off the boat, I walked around the town, an activity I did every day while here. In the morning in Champasak, people sell fish and vegetables, and monks come for alms. Champasak is a small town with many temples. On the day I walked around, besides local monks, there were also Thai monks.

It happened to be the day when villagers from Sakon Nakhon brought a replica statue of Luang Pu Sao to this temple, and dozens of monks from Thailand came for alms here as well. mr.hotsia recommends hotels near Wat Phou, staying in old Champasak town. After that, I ate fried fish for several days. 14 53 50.243 N, 105 52 54.132 E You can view the location on the map.
