If you ask if it’s beautiful, I’d say it’s just okay, not much to see. It’s more striking to see the Mekong water plunging down. It’s very impressive in its grandeur. Meanwhile, the Mekong on the western side flows normally. If the entire Mekong River tried to flow through here, it definitely wouldn’t be possible. The Mekong is very large.
Most visitors to Khonephapheng buy tours from Thailand where tours are sold, and tourists are numerous. The large bus parking lot can hold about a hundred buses. There is a small motorcycle parking area for me and locals. Entrance fee to Khonephapheng is 5,000 kip per person. For independent travelers, it’s best to avoid long holiday periods because thousands of tourists compete to take photos and enjoy the view. If renting a motorcycle or driving your own car, come around 3 to 4 PM.
This is when the sunlight is softer, photos look better, and there are fewer people. But if you come during non-holiday times, there are almost no visitors. Food and drinks here are expensive; canned iced coffee costs 35 baht, while in other parts of Laos it’s 10 baht. It’s not that everything in Laos is expensive, only at major tourist spots where food prices are higher. Regular Lao food like pho costs 10,000 kip (40 baht) per bowl, and large bottled water is 20 baht. But everything at Khonephapheng is pricey.
When visiting Khonephapheng, be very careful if you walk down to the lower viewpoint. If you fall, you’ll end up in Cambodia for sure, because just a little further is the border crossing into Cambodia. The Mekong in Cambodia becomes a huge lake.
