Li Phi Waterfall Tad Somphamit http://www.hotsia.com > Travel Pakse Champasak > Li Phi Waterfall Tad Somphamit Li Phi is well known among Thai people and has been famous for a long time. Nowadays, many tours from Thailand come to visit Li Phi. Li Phi is not only famous in Thailand but is recognized worldwide and attracts visitors globally. Compared to Khon Phapheng, Li Phi has more tourists because there are accommodations nearby, located at Hua Don Det and Hua Don Khon, while Li Phi is also around Hua Don Khon.

Li Phi is worth visiting and it is recommended to stay one night at Don Det for a relaxed trip. 'Li' is a fishing tool used by locals in the Mekong River. If you visit Li Phi, you will see these fishing traps placed around. They look like large fish baskets. The story goes that during the war in Laos, many people died. Locals used these traps at the Li Phi spot to catch fish but ended up catching bodies and spirits, hence the name Li Phi (Ghost Trap). Actually, Li Phi also has another name: "Somphamit Waterfall."

It is a channel where several Mekong streams converge (Somphamit means several streams coming together as friends). This place is a narrow rocky channel with different levels, creating a beautiful waterfall. Some people mistakenly think the entire Mekong River flows into Li Phi and then continues to Khon Phapheng, which is impossible because the Mekong is very large with a huge water volume and much stronger currents than it appears. In fact, Khon Phapheng is on the eastern branch of the Mekong.

Li Phi is on the western side, a narrow Mekong convergence with layered rock formations. The Mekong streams flow southward into Laos towards the Cambodia border, forming a beautiful border lake. This is where I took you to see the dolphins. If you cannot visualize the Mekong River's path, try clicking on the top of the images on hotsia.com where GPS coordinates are provided for every outdoor photo. After clicking, try zooming in and out to see the overall Mekong area.

This helps you visualize the area when traveling. You can visit Li Phi or Somphamit Waterfall or Tad Somphamit by public bus. Follow these travel steps: from Bangkok to Ubon, from Ubon to Pakse, from Pakse to Don Khong, from Don Khong to Don Det, and to see the dolphins and Li Phi waterfall. Mr.hotsia recommends hotels at Don Khong near this area.
