Nightlife in Pakse http://www.hotsia.com > Travel Pakse Champasak > Nightlife in Pakse On my first day in Pakse, carrying a heavy backpack, I met a young tennis player who is now a basketball player in Pakse. We had a casual chat because I was eating pho and drinking Lao coffee at his shop, and he noticed my tennis racket. After that, I traveled around Don Khong, Champasak for several days. Today, passing by, I stopped to say hi and gather information about popular nightlife spots in Pakse.

This young man said he would help show me around. Later I learned his name is "Hua." He is a mixed child (half Chinese, half Lao, possibly Vietnamese too, not sure). Many thanks to him for providing a lot of information about Pakse nightlife. The most popular area where locals hang out to drink beer (called 'pai rin' or 'pai tiao len' in local slang) is the riverside camp along the Mekong River all the way to the Se River. In the video, I filmed almost the entire stretch so you can see the nighttime atmosphere.
The most famous place today is the "Tan Koo" bar shown above the photo; click to see the map. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, this place is packed with no seats available. They sell Lao Beer at 8,000 kip per bottle. Normally, Lao people drink Lao Beer at this price nationwide because the wholesale price is 6,500 kip or about 26 baht. However, most tourists pay 10,000 kip per bottle, which is still reasonable. Bars like this have beer girls who promote Lao Beer and Carlsberg.
They are business partners (for more info on Lao Beer, click here). There are about 70 beer girls in Pakse who are transported by van to work. Before getting off the van, all their mobile phones are collected. Around 10 or 11 PM, the van picks them up to go home and returns their phones. Lao Beer is a cultural beer of Laos; if anyone behaves inappropriately, they will no longer be allowed to be beer girls. Speaking of Lao Beer, I want to update that recently a new Lao Beer was released, sold at
13,000 kip per bottle, double the price of regular Lao Beer. I tried it and found it smoother and more delicate but not less intoxicating. Next time you visit Laos, if you are a Lao Beer fan, don't forget to try it. The Lao Beer bar I sat at is a youth bar that plays requested songs, including Thai, Lao, Chinese, and Vietnamese music. The owner is Vietnamese. Other bars along the Mekong have different styles, including 'Phuea Cheewit' (For Life) and live music. Besides the riverside seating, there are also floating bars on the Mekong River.
But only a few bars are floating; most people prefer sitting by the Mekong. Importantly, nightlife in Pakse only lasts until 11 PM. After that, police start patrolling and checking everything. In the past four or five years, they used to close roads completely, but now they just check. All entertainment venues in Laos close at 11 PM. The two main nightclubs in Pakse also close at 11 PM, as do all bars and restaurants.
So plan your dining and outings carefully; you need to start early because by 11 PM, you should be back to rest. Unlike Thailand, where nightlife can go until 1 AM or later with late-night eateries serving alcohol, here it ends earlier. I also have some data on AIDS/HIV in Thailand and Laos for 2010. In Thailand, 1.4% of people (in 2550 BE) live with AIDS, about 610,000 people, with 30,000 deaths. In Laos, 0.2% live with AIDS, about 5,500 people, with 100 deaths.
Source: https://www.cia.gov In 2010, I think the number of people with AIDS in Thailand and Laos increased significantly, especially in high-risk groups. I stopped drinking around 11 PM because I had many tasks the next day and wanted to save energy to play basketball. I haven't played in a long time and wanted to capture the atmosphere of the central sports stadium in Pakse to share. So I didn't stay up late. In summary, we drank three bottles of Lao Beer between two people here, plus two bottles earlier at a restaurant. mr.hotsia December 2010
